Sabato’s Crystal Ball: Of ‘Lean D’ gov’s races, GOP ‘most excited’ about NM

On Wednesday, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a project of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, made two race rating changes, both changing gubernatorial races in Michigan and Pennsylvania from “Leans Democratic” to “Likely Democratic.”

However, it kept New Mexico’s “Leans Democratic” rating. But as the Crystal Ball noted, of all the Leans D races, New Mexico Republicans’ race to take out Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham appears to be the most exciting.

It wrote regarding the three remaining Leans D races, “Of this trio, Republicans have seemed most excited about New Mexico, although Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) has consistently led 2020 Senate nominee Mark Ronchetti (R) in polling. Govs. Tim Walz (D-MN) and Janet Mills (D-ME) have led their rivals, too.”

All but one recent poll have consistently rated the race within single digits of Lujan Grisham, with the most recent The Hill/Emerson poll showing Ronchetti with 43 percent to the Governor’s 48 percent with a margin of error of three percentage points — a near statistical tie. Five percent of voters remain undecided. Three percent are voting for another candidate (Libertarian Karen Bedonie, who was formerly a Republican before switching parties).

Far-left organizations and labor unions have thrown their support behind Lujan Grisham, while the New Mexico Fraternal Order of Police, Albuquerque Police Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and public safety groups have backed Ronchetti.

In New Mexico, crime is a major issue, as is the border, with one of the largest drug busts happening in Albuquerque this month. The city recently hit its 100th homicide, on track to exceed 2021’s most deadly year of 117 killings. The federal government has reported over two million illegal immigrant apprehensions on the border within the year alone.
Ronchetti will debate Lujan Grisham on KOB 4 on Friday, September 30. The debate will be one hour starting at 7:00 p.m.

Democrat gov. denies press credentials to two conservative news outlets

By John Block and Nick Wilbur

On Wednesday, both The Conservative New Mexican and the Piñon Post were denied entry into Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s media briefing regarding her support for abortion in the State of New Mexico.

Left-wing media went head-over-heels when a far-left reporter, Shaun Griswold, for the foreign-owned “Source New Mexico” was not admitted entry into Republican gubernatorial nominee Mark Ronchetti’s private campaign rally with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) earlier this month.

According to the campaign, “Source New Mexico was denied a credential because they are ‘a left-wing advocacy group, not a legitimate news organization.’” The online newspaper’s liberal founding, dark-money funding, and one-sided “reporting” indicate this to be true.

Regarding Griswold not being allowed into the campaign event, leftist media collectively lost it over “freedom of the press.”

The Las Vegas Optic wrote in a melodramatic editorial, “It’s a gross overstep of authority, and one everyone should be concerned about,” adding, “We don’t know about everyone reading this, but that sure doesn’t sound like freedom of the press to us.”

The Santa Fe Reporter chimed in, claiming Griswold’s denied entry was “an obvious affront to press freedom.”

New Mexico Foundation for Open Government (NMFOG) whined that booting Griswold was “a dangerous precedent to let any public servant decide who is and is not a ‘legitimate’ reporter.”

To test this theory of supposed “press freedom,” both the Piñon Post, a news site initially founded in 2018, and The Conservative New Mexican, founded in 2021, requested press credentials for Lujan Grisham’s Wednesday press briefing.

The event was scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday. As of this writing, the governor’s press secretary has yet to respond to either of our requests for access.

We will see if these supposed beacons of journalistic prowess will be crowing from the top of their lungs about “open government” and “press freedom” now that two conservative-leaning outlets were denied access—to a PUBLIC event, no less.

At the presser, Lujan Grisham announced that in the 2023 Legislative Session, if re-elected, she will designate $10 million of public capital outlay money to build a new abortion facility in Doña Ana County, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican, which was granted access to the briefing.

Even more damning, every single correspondence sent from the Piñon Post requesting comment on a story or access to an official press conference has gone unanswered, both by press secretary Nora Sackett and former communications director Tripp Stelnicki.

The shameless hypocrisy of these leftist “news” outlets like the Reporter and Optic and “open government” groups like NMFOG prove that the crowing over “press freedom” is all a political ploy meant to dredge up more controversy and take jabs at Conservative voices.

We will patiently wait for these leftist editorial boards and “transparency” groups to denounce Lujan Grisham for her administration’s “affronts on the freedom of the press.”

John Block is the founder and editor of the Piñon Post. Nick Wilbur runs The Conservative New Mexican

MLG dodges key forum held by business leaders

On Monday, Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham dodged a key NAIOP forum with business and commercial real estate leaders that was held in Albuquerque.

Republican gubernatorial nominee Mark Ronchetti was the only candidate in attendance after the governor did not show up.

As the forum began, Ronchetti’s campaign manager unveiled a photo of Lujan Grisham to poke fun at her absence, which was quickly removed by the event’s hosts.

“I personally felt very strongly that the governor should be here to give an accounting to the business community for the last four years [and, if reelected], let us know what she plans on doing for the next four years,” NAIOP chairman-elect, Lance Sigmon, said to the crowd.

“I just felt the business community was owed this, and I’m sorry I couldn’t deliver on this,” Sigmon added. “But her opponent, Mark Ronchetti, is here, and I wanted to thank Mark for being here.”

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, Lujan Grisham’s spokeswoman Delaney Corcoran “declined to disclose where the governor was or what she was doing Monday. Her press secretary, Nora Meyers Sackett, declined, too.”

After the forum, Ronchetti shared a news clip from KRQE 13, writing, “I was excited to be at @NAIOPNM  today to share my vision for New Mexico, at what was supposed to be a gubernatorial candidate forum. However, @Michelle4NM declined to join and defend her indefensible record on small business and economic issues.”

A recent report from the New Mexico Restaurant Association, which was a co-sponsor of the NAIOP forum, revealed that Lujan Grisham’s lockdowns had killed around 20 percent or nearly 1,100 New Mexico restaurants. The Governor’s own Department of Tourism revealed that over 40% of New Mexico’s small businesses had closed amid the Governor’s lockdowns.

Another ranking puts Lujan Grisham’s re-election prospects in peril

On Monday, Fox News updated its power rankings showing New Mexico shifting from “leans Democrat” to “toss-up,” giving Republicans even more hope in the Land of Enchantment for a Republican victory to take back the governorship.

Fox News reported, “There is one bright spot for Republicans in these rankings, and that is in New Mexico. As Josh Kraushaar reported last week, New Mexico is home to a high Hispanic population, a voting bloc shifting rightward. The GOP candidate is former local news anchor (meteorologist) Mark Ronchetti.”

“He is appealing to conservatives and moderates by focusing on crime and the economy, while keeping a distance from Trump. Incumbent Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, has a $3.4-million fundraising lead as of early July, but polling does not give her a clear edge. New Mexico moves from Lean D to Toss Up.”

After the big news, Rochetti’s campaign wrote, “Fox News shifts #NMGov race to “toss-up” showing the momentum behind our campaign! New Mexicans are tired of @Michelle4NM and her out of touch policies. We are ready to bring bold new leadership to Santa Fe.”

The prospect of picking up the blue state’s governorship lends hope to Republicans across the board, as the GOP has the possibility of taking back the state House and other state-wide offices, including the attorney generalship, land commissioner, state treasurer, secretary of state, among others.

MLG claims ‘New Mexicans will re-elect me’

On Friday, far-left Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham debuted an increasingly cocky tone on Twitter, claiming that because she supports abortion up to birth, a teachers’ union takeover of education, and other initiatives, she “will” get a second term as governor.

She claimed, “I’m everything @MarkRonchettiNM is not. That’s why New Mexicans will re-elect me this November.”

New Mexicans responded to the nonchalant tweet, with one person writing, “Pro Education? That must be why NM is ranked last in education.  Weird.”

Other New Mexicans offered other takes:

As the November election is right around the corner, Lujan Grisham faces an unprecedented challenge as Republican Mark Ronchetti is polling ahead or even with the embattled governor who locked down the state during the pandemic, leading to 40% of small businesses going under. Libertarian Karen Bedonie, who previously ran for governor as a Republican but left the party, is also running.

Lujan Grisham’s tweet was reminiscent of Hillary Clinton’s tweet claiming she would be a “future president.”

Lujan Grisham attacks New Mexicans who oppose her as ‘extremists’

Far-left Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is up for reelection, has become increasingly defensive, with most of her social media posts and fundraising pleas attacking her Republican opponent Mark Ronchetti.

In a string of nasty emails and tweets, Lujan Grisham has claimed Ronchetti and Gov. Ron Desantis (R-FL), who will stump for him Sunday in Carlsbad, are “extremists.”

The attacks from the embattled governor who paid off an alleged sexual assault victim $150,000 don’t just stop at Ronchetti and DeSantis. Now, Lujan Grisham is claiming all New Mexicans who do not support her are “far-right extremists.”

She wrote on Twitter that Ronchetti “wishes his ties to far-right extremists would stay hidden, but this weekend he is making the mistake of inviting them all out,” referring to New Mexicans supporting his campaign and that of U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-CD2), who will join DeSantis and Ronchetti at the rally.

Ronchetti wrote following the attack that Lujan Grisham “started her campaign by calling New Mexicans who opposed her ‘lizard people.’ Today, she called them ‘extremists.’” He added, “New Mexicans deserve better than a governor who demonizes and insults citizens who disagree with her.”

Ronchetti is referring to her campaign launch, where she bashed New Mexicans drowning her out as “lizard people.”

The Governor then claimed following the “lizard people” attack that she took “the high road” by calling them names.

Many New Mexicans denounced Lujan Grisham’s latest demeaning attack against her political opponents, including Republican New Mexico House Leader Jim Townsend (R-Artesia) who wrote, “Mark is right. MLG’s comment is ludicrous, disrespectful to New Mexican’s but typical of this Governor’s hyper political rhetoric. Shameful.”

Others responded as well:

The rally with DeSantis, Herrell, and Ronchetti will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday in Carlsbad.

MLG freaks out after news of DeSantis campaign stop for Herrell, Ronchetti

On Tuesday, shortly following the announcement that firebrand conservative Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is coming to New Mexico to promote Congresswoman Yvette Herrell and GOP gubernatorial nominee Mark Ronchetti, Democrat Gov. Lujan Grisham went in full-blown panic mode.

In a frantic email to supporters, Lujan Grisham claim Ronchetti and DeSantis are the “extremist GOP,” while dubbing DeSantis “one of the key leaders of the MAGA movement.”

She wrote, “It’s no surprise that Ron DeSantis supports Mark Ronchetti. They’re both Trump-style Republicans who want to restrict abortion, deny science, and let white supremacist hate groups off the hook.”

Ronchetti “permits” abortion up to the 15th week, which is consistent with a majority of New Mexicans and Americans who believe there should be limits on the life-ending procedure. Lujan Grisham backs abortion up to birth and infanticide.

It is unclear what the scandal-ridden governor means by “deny science” since she denies that there are two genders and that babies are humans in the womb. Her claim that Ronchetti and DeSantis “let white supremacist hate groups off the hook” is also unfounded, as there are no signs this is the case.

“Ron DeSantis’ plan this weekend is to raise a boatload of money for my opponent, help him surge ahead in the polls, and turn New Mexico into MAGA territory. But we’re not going to let that happen,” Lujan Grisham claimed.

She then begged for money, writing, “To put a halt to the MAGA movement, I need to hit my $25,000 before Ron DeSantis reaches New Mexico this weekend. It’s the only way I’ll have enough funding to counter GOP lies and reach voters with the truth.”

She concluded with another plea, asking, “will you donate $5 right now to help me defeat GOP extremism?”

Ron DeSantis visiting NM to stump for Herrell, Ronchetti

Firebrand conservative Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is visiting Carlsbad on Sunday to stump for Congresswoman Yvette Herrell of the Second District for her reelection and GOP nominee for governor Mark Ronchetti as he attempts to knock off far-left Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. Herrell is facing far-left Democrat candidate Gabe Vasquez.

According to Reuters, “DeSantis is also scheduled to join a New Mexico rally for Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Ronchetti and House of Representatives incumbent Yvette Herrell, who are running neck-and-neck against their Democratic opponents.”

The Hill reports that DeSantis will visit Carlsbad on Sunday and then travel to Phoenix, Arizona, to stump for Trump-backed candidates Kari Lake, who is running for governor, and U.S. Senate candidate Blake Masters.

“Each of the candidates that DeSantis is rallying for has been endorsed by Trump, with the exception of Herrell, though she previously won the former president’s support during her successful 2020 campaign for her House seat,” The Hill reports.

The popular governor is poised to offer an emphatic endorsement to the two New Mexico Republicans, which could boost them going forward toward the November 8 election. Absentee voting starts in around two months, with the race just around the corner.

The event will take place at the Walter Gerrells Performing Arts and Exhibition Center located at 4012 National Parks Highway in Carlsbad. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. The event starts at 4:00 p.m. Tickets can be found here or by visiting MarkRonchetti.com.

LA Times: MLG is in for a ‘walloping,’ defeat will be her own doing

In a recent Los Angeles Times article written by columnist Mark Z. Barabak, he chides Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham over her failures in office and gives insight from an outsider into why Republicans have a shot at winning back the New Mexico Governor’s Mansion.

In the article, Barabak notes how abortion has become a hot-button issue in New Mexico but how Republican Mark Ronchetti has attempted to put Lujan Grisham on the defense due to her support for abortion up to birth policies.

He writes, “Some of the difficulty is Grisham’s doing, a result of scandals involving her personal use of public funds and a sexual harassment settlement she paid to a former staffer. But much of her vulnerability arises from issues like crime, the economy and Biden’s drag on Democrats across the country.”

According to his column, when trying to get the far-left governor on the record for what restrictions she supports on abortion, he noted, “Asked if the governor favored any limits, a campaign spokeswoman responded with generalities about Grisham’s defense of abortion rights.”

But we know Lujan Grisham’s position is for unlimited abortions for any cases up to the second of birth. She affirmed this by signing a 2021 bill that stripped all abortion limits and protections for mothers, babies, and medical professionals.

She reaffirmed this position when pressed by CNN’s Jake Tapper. She responded to his question of what limits New Mexico has despite national polls showing most Americans back abortion limits, with a defense of her policy.

She said to Tapper, “There are no restrictions. given that we interpret and I agree that, again, per this new Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, is this is a privacy right and a personal decision between a woman and her doctor. and to interfere in any of these medical decisions creates, and it has, unknown, untold reductions in civil liberties for any number of individuals.”

These extreme positions adopted by Lujan Grisham, among other issues, such as the economy, are likely to be her downfall, Barabak predicts.

He concluded his column by writing, “Then Democrats are probably in for the walloping they’re desperate to avoid.”

Ronchetti breaks his silence on U.S. Supreme Court abortion decision

On Friday, the Republican nominee for governor Mark Ronchetti broke his silence on the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling, which overturned the pro-abortion Roe v. Wade.

He released the following statement:

Today’s Court ruling paves the way for a measured dialogue on the issue of abortion that will save lives and should result in policies that are more mainstream and reflect our shared values.

The Governor has taken an extreme position on abortion, out of step with most New Mexicans, in believing that abortion should be unrestricted – all the way up to the moment a child is born. This has made New Mexico the late-term abortion capital of North America and does not reflect our values.

While I am pro-life, governors cannot act alone and any changes to our laws will require collaboration and agreement with the legislature. As Governor, I would seek a middle ground with our legislature that ends the practice of late-term and partial-birth abortion that the current Governor supports. I believe permitting abortion up to 15 weeks and in cases involving rape, incest, and when a mother’s life is at risk is a very reasonable position that most in New Mexico will support regardless of party affiliation. This will end the barbaric practice of late-term abortions. I will also strongly support policies that provide support to expectant mothers and their unborn children.

He added:

I am pro-life and believe abortion should be rare. Governor Lujan-Grisham supports abortion up to the very moment a child is born. Her position is extreme and does not reflect our values. It’s time to end the barbaric practice of late-term abortion in New Mexico.

Pro-abortion Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham wrote following the statement, “Today, a new generation of women will be forced to face a future where they cannot seek safe, legal abortions. We have long feared this moment and I’m going to continue to fight like hell to ensure every New Mexico woman has access to reproductive health care.”

The governor added in another statement from her official gubernatorial account that she thinks women will now be “second-class citizens” because they don’t have the right to kill their babies protected on a national level.
