Survey uncovers voters’ stance on GOP’s potential immigration focus

A recent poll conducted by News Nation/Decision Desk HQ News reveals that nearly one-third of voters feel that securing the border and addressing illegal immigration should be a top priority if Republicans win the White House and both chambers of Congress in the upcoming election. The survey found that 32 percent of respondents prioritize immigration, with 30 percent leaning towards prioritizing spending to combat inflation.

Within the Republican voter base, support for increased attention at the U.S.-Mexico border is even more pronounced, with 52 percent of Republican respondents indicating that border security should be a primary concern for GOP lawmakers post-election. This issue is exacerbated in border states, including New Mexico.

The survey delves into opinions on the effectiveness of building a wall along the southern border. Only 25 percent of respondents, regardless of party affiliation, believe that constructing a wall would help address the country’s border security issues if Republicans achieve a federal trifecta next year.

Regarding funding to address migrant-related problems, 53 percent of respondents support the federal government increasing funding to state and local governments. Notably, more Democratic voters (73 percent) support this funding compared to Republicans (38 percent).

The poll also highlights a divergence in views on government spending. A majority of respondents, both Democrats and Republicans, believe that government spending is currently out of control. The survey indicates that 55 percent of respondents feel that Congress must take action to bring down government spending, even if it involves shutting down the government.

When it comes to supporting a government shutdown to lower federal spending, 70 percent of Republicans are in favor, while 39 percent of Democrats share the same perspective.

The survey, conducted from November 26 to 27 among 3,200 registered voters, has a margin of error of two percentage points.

GOP ex-candidate takes consultants to court over botched campaign rollout

On Thursday, it was revealed that former gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Ronchetti, a Republican, had filed a lawsuit against his former consultant, Virginia-based GoBigMedia. He is being represented by former Republican Gov. Susana Martinez’s general counsel Jessica Hernandez.

Ronchetti claims the firm botched the launch of his campaign websites during both the 2022 gubernatorial and 2020 U.S. Senate elections. He says the second fail by the company cost him his job as a meteorologist at KRQE 13 News.

The lawsuit alleges that Ronchetti made an agreement with the television network to leave on January 6, 2020 for the Senate race, but GoBigMedia put the campaign website live that evening, which was “leaked” to the media.

The lawsuit states, “The second leak also occurred before Mr. Ronchetti had announced his candidacy, and in fact before he had made his final decision whether to run,” adding, “As a result of this leak, Mr. Ronchetti was forced to resign immediately and without warning from his job at KRQE-TV.”

The botched website operations by the firm caused “financial losses, loss of reputation, damage to his campaign, damage to his employment prospects, and other economic and noneconomic damages,” as the lawsuit reads.

“Filed in Albuquerque during February, the lawsuit does not specify how much money Ronchetti is seeking from Go Big Media but seeks compensatory and punitive damages, accusing the company of unfair or deceptive trade practices, breach of contract and negligence,” noted the Santa Fe Reporter

Ronchetti signaled a possible new run for office late last month by writing on Facebook, “Thank you all for your kind comments, Krysty and I and the girls appreciate it. There’s a lot of stuff we’ve been working on behind the scenes. We’re announcing one of those things here soon. So stay tuned. And don’t worry…my sleeves are still rolled up.”

From ‘Can’t win for losing’ to ‘We can and we will win’

We are not going to wait for another election cycle.

A response from a Republican insider to last week’s article was that “not much is going to change in New Mexico this election cycle. Depending on who wins the Presidency and the NM US Senate race, there is hope.” The Conventional Wisdom, “Conservatives have been losing for so long, what is another couple more losing election cycles?” Can we afford to wait?

Two of our children called a while ago to announce they were expecting. Then recently, they told us we would have granddaughters. We are excited to have granddaughters now too. But as I write this article, I wonder, when will the Democrat-run school systems and the teacher’s unions let us know what the gender of our grandchild is?

While Republicans squabble amongst themselves, the Albuquerque mayor may be lining up to run for the governorship in 2026. The mayor will do for New Mexico what he has done for Albuquerque: record murders, record crime (APD underreports significant crimes), and record homelessness. In Albuquerque, even the homeless and criminals complain about crime.

When Republican leaders were wailing, “We can’t win because the Democrats’ redistricting and campaign tactics are unfair,” they succeeded in driving the Republican “rank and file” away from the polls. Then, the Republican leaders blamed the rank and file for not showing up.

While Republican leaders follow Robert’s Rules of Order, the Democrats line their pockets and shake down businesses. Even oil and gas companies contributed to various Democrats that wanted to shut down their industries.

While Republican leaders support free enterprise, the Democrats create union-only jobs that funnel money into their political campaigns. The union-only movie industry gets its twenty-five percent kickback, union-only public construction projects, and union-only public employees. The message could not be clearer with the shooting on the “Rust” set after the union-only workers were replaced with non-union workers.

Republican leaders’ unofficial motto does not have to be, “Can’t win for losing.” It can be “We can and we will win.” That is why I write this column every week despite people telling me I am wasting my time and risking my business and personal safety. I am not alone in this effort, and we are making progress.

After Ronna McDaniel won her re-election to the Republican National Committee, she announced this was her last term. After that unconscionable election flyer and the drumming of the 2022 election, state Rep. Jim Townsend (I always had great respect for Townsend) did the honorable thing: he resigned from his leadership position.

In this article and others, I have discussed how to keep our Republican Party open to all while remaining competitive in the general election. The Republican National Committee is investigating this very issue.

In past articles, I have addressed utilizing the strategies (which are legal) that the Democrats used to win elections, which included “ballot harvesting.” A recent CNN article discussed that the RNC is investigating utilizing a form of ballot harvesting.

I have always been a proponent of congressional and statewide candidates working with the county party and their efforts. County parties are integral to energizing the rank and file. That is why I was disheartened when the leading gubernatorial candidate told the delegates he did not need them. However, it is a hopeful sign that then-candidate Mark Ronchetti now seeks an audience with the Bernalillo County Party.

New Mexico Republicans can take lessons from the Battle of New Orleans. The British Army, fresh from defeating Napoleon, believed they were invincible and marched into battle only to be mowed down by General Andrew Jackson. Likewise, the Santa Fe Democrats have had total control of New Mexico for so long that they no longer hide their corruption and disdain for the New Mexico People; they are ripe for a resounding defeat too.

ABQ small businesswoman Michaela Chavez running for BernCo Commission

Albuquerque small businesswoman Michaela Chavez, a Republican, announced her candidacy for the Bernalillo County Commission’s District 1 seat, which encompasses most of the city’s west side south of Paseo Del Norte, west of Carlisle Boulevard, and north of Central. Along with the North Valley, Downtown, and the Westside, the District also encompasses To’Hajiilee and part of Laguna Pueblo.

The District is currently represented by far-left Democrat activist Debbie O’Malley, who was one of the people who tried to create Albuquerque’s “International District.”

According to a release from the Chavez campaign, Mrs. Chaves “is a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, and her familiarity and experience with her fellow citizens in Bernalillo County brings a voice to the county commission that offers common-sense solutions to old problems.” She has been involved with the local Bernalillo County Republican Party and previously sought the GOP nomination for Congress in 2021’s special election to fill a vacancy left by Deb Haaland in the First Congressional District.

“Before anything else, Michaela Chavez is a proud mother of two children. Chavez assists her husband of 18 years in the operation of his small financial firm. Chavez has a lengthy track record of community service and grassroots organization. Michaela Chavez plans to focus on crime, educational programs, and economic recovery initiatives to repair the damages caused by harmful policies during the” pandemic lockdowns.

“Michaela was taught all of the values that make New Mexico a great place to live: faith, family, hard work, and culture. She has also seen first-hand the same hardships that all citizens of Bernalillo County have faced: high crime, poverty, poor education, and leaders who have kept us dead last. She is running to address these issues and leave her kids with a better Albuquerque that affords them with the opportunities that we all know we can achieve with the right leadership.”

Michaela Chavez writes on her website, “I want to focus on the issues that impact New Mexicans, and we need to stop electing politicians who play political games with people’s lives. I want to work for you. We need to create more jobs, protect small business, improve our schools, and make public safety a top priority. The old ideas aren’t getting the job done—Bernalillo County needs a fresh perspective.”

Education, crime, small business, and homelessness are among the issues Chavez is running on. Read more about her by visiting her website here

Piñon Post holding one-on-one interviews with candidates for governor

Over the next couple of weeks, the Piñon Post will be posting exclusive one-on-one interviews with all the New Mexico gubernatorial candidates who have responded to requests.

In these interviews, Piñon Post editor and founder John Block will ask a multitude of questions about these candidates’ experience, what they would do as governor, and why they are cut out for the job.

Interview requests have been extended to all seven Republican gubernatorial candidates on the Republican side, which have all been accepted. Incumbent Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham was afforded the opportunity for an interview. As of Sunday, August 29, Lujan Grisham’s office has not responded or accepted the invitation.

In fairness to all the candidates for governor, their interviews will be no longer than 40 minutes each and will include questions related to their experience, as well as some questions asked to all of them. The interviews will be posted in alphabetical order by their last name, to attempt the highest level of fairness to all and no appearance of favoritism to any such candidate. They will appear in this order: Karen Bedonie, Jay Block, Rebecca Dow, Ethel Maharg, Louie Sanchez, Tim Walsh, and Greg Zanetti.

“I look forward to New Mexicans being able to hear directly from the candidates for governor, without the filter of the mainstream media spin,” said Block. “These interviews will give each candidate ample time and an equal platform for them to lay out their platforms and ideas while giving the public a resource to make up their own minds about the candidates.”

“If Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is serious about keeping her seat in 2022, she will join all seven Republican candidates and accept the Piñon Post’s invitation for a meaningful interview.”

The Piñon Post has made it a policy of not endorsing candidates.

MLG bashes GOP, ‘opponents’ of her public health mandates in fundraising email

In a fundraising email sent out over the weekend, scandal-ridden alleged serial groper Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham once again bashed Republicans while claiming she had followed the science regarding her latest round of mask mandates.

She wrote the following:

We’re well on our way to herd immunity in New Mexico, but we’re not out of the woods yet. As the delta variant spreads, I’ve taken immediate action to keep New Mexicans safe by reinstating a mask mandate for most indoor settings and requiring vaccines for those who work in high-risk areas like hospitals and nursing homes.

As former Cabinet Secretary of New Mexico’s Department of Health, I’ll never stop following scientific guidance to save lives from this virus – no matter what misinformation my political opponents and extremists spread about the severity of COVID-19 or the efficacy of vaccines. I want to know what YOU think of my administration’s handling of the pandemic so far.

My team is conducting a live poll to find out what New Mexicans think about my pandemic response. Your response will send a clear message to those COVID deniers and opponents of sensible and critical public health measures that New Mexicans support following the science to keep our citizens safe, so I’m counting on you to lock in your answer before our survey closes at midnight tonight.

It is unclear what Lujan Grisham claims is a “sensible and critical public health measure,” but throughout the pandemic, she has forced New Mexicans to stand in freezing bread lines to buy food over the holiday, forced the vaccination of health care workers, locked-down schools, among other anti-science, nonsensical measures.

In the poll questions, Lujan Grisham included “Small businesses were especially hard hit by the economic fallout from the pandemic. To keep business owners afloat and revitalize our economy, I signed a law that provided $200 million in pandemic relief for small businesses. Do you agree with my decision to support small businesses during the pandemic?” However, the only answers allowed to this question were, “Yes, supporting small businesses was an essential aspect of your pandemic response” and “No, we should let small businesses go under during this unprecedented crisis.”

Another question asked in her poll was, “Throughout the pandemic, the GOP has spread dangerous conspiracy theories that undermine the severity of this deadly virus, discourage commonsense public health tactics and increase vaccine hesitancy. How worried are you about extremist members of the GOP taking control of our state?”

However, throughout the pandemic, Democrats cast doubt on the effectiveness of the vaccine:

Now, it appears Lujan Grisham is trying to throw the Republican Party under the bus for her personal failures during the pandemic, while she desperately seeks to cling to power. She previously bashed her opponents as“lizard people.”

Seventh Republican, pro-life leader Ethel Maharg, running for governor

On Saturday, pro-life leader Ethel Maharg announced that she is seeking the Republican nomination for governor of New Mexico, making her the seventh GOP contender for the coveted post to take out scandal-ridden alleged serial groper incumbent Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Maharg announced her run at New Beginnings Church of God in Albuquerque, with many in attendance. Maharg, the former three-term mayor of Cuba, New Mexico touted her experience and how during her time running the municipality, she “brought economic development to the very economically distressed part of our state. What I left is still standing today, continuing to provide economic stability to the area. We brought national attention to the state with an event that showcased the White House Christmas tree. This event brought in double the gross receipts revenue for that quarter. When I left office, I left it with 1.9 million in the bank.”

Maharg said, “I am running for governor to breathe life into New Mexico by restoring the foundation, for it is the foundation, our values, and our Constitution, that made our country the envy of the world.”

She is a supporter of law enforcement, saying, “I am pro-law enforcement. Without respect for the law-no society can exist. I will never defund the police.”

In 2018, Maharg coordinated the Convoy of Hope for Albuquerque, an event that brought over a million dollars’ worth of goods and services to area residents. She also worked with the Hispanic Action Network to distribute 350,000 voter guides throughout the state in an effort to help with the last governor’s race in 2018. For five years, she worked for the pro-life pregnancy center Care Net and currently serves as the executive director of the Right to Life Committee of New Mexico.

“I will continue to work hard in bringing a Godly administration to serve my fellow New Mexicans,” she said.

Maharg joins Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block of Rio Rancho, businesswoman Karen Bedonie of Mexican Springs, financier Greg Zanetti of Albuquerque, ex-Gary Johnson staffer Tim Walsh of Albuquerque, state Rep. Rebecca Dow of Truth or Consequences, and businessman Louie Sanchez in the crowded Republican field.

Patriots must come together for the sake of freedom in New Mexico

Politics has been a part of my life since before I was of legal voting age.  My family and I have worked to help Christians and conservatives through grassroots efforts and to promote candidates on the federal, state, and local levels.

I was also blessed to have seen from the ground up the Republican organization — also known as the “machine” — as I often call it or have heard it referred to, at work in our state. On both sides, many Democrats and Republicans call it the “Establishment,” which is now virtually a dirty word. Many of the finest and most selfless folks I know work in these ranks.

Early on in life, I learned the importance of our local party chair and the subsequent infrastructure involved at every county level across the state. Poll watchers, poll captains, and workers who, for no money, tirelessly worked not only recruiting but, promoting candidates and, even more importantly, working to protect our voting.

Being a rancher and in the Ag industry, as a young man I was involved with organizations such as People for the West — a strong grassroots effort in the ‘80s.  More recently, many of you may know me from my efforts in promoting President Donald Trump, candidates, and issues while riding horseback at rallies around the state. Simultaneously, as a youth and college student, I recall my folks receiving calls from who I would consider “Heavy Hitters” or household political names from around New Mexico asking not for money (well, some did), but for support. Those calling from the “Establishment” had learned if my family said “yes,” they would be ”all in” and work tirelessly to get the job done.

The grassroots folks are also volunteers passionate about their causes; whether working the land, rural New Mexico, life, or freedom, they give of themselves tirelessly and to the point of exhaustion. I have noticed being in both worlds (grassroots and Establishment), I saw the same people at “Establishment” party conventions year after year, and being a part of the grassroots effort, I saw many of the same grassroots faces promoting and rallying weekend after weekend.

Folks getting tired, discouraged, and frustrated intensified especially with the current economy and level of craziness from our government and politicians. In the past, most public dissent came from those I seldom saw at rallies or working at our local party headquarters. Being they were not involved on a ground level, it was easy to criticize or Monday morning quarterback. I think many of those are now the secret sideline agitators stirring up dissent between those who are working.

However, I see another phenomenon much of which I credit to the rise of social media. Now we are publicly verbally shooting at each other. It has become all too easy to put our thoughts into a quick post. We all have thoughts, some good, some bad, but the “post” button has taken expressing them to a new low level for our society. Attacks being made on our party leadership, primarily former Congressman Steve Pearce, I feel, are taking us into the perilous ground for our party.

I am astonished at some of what has been said, how quickly we turn on one who fought so hard for New Mexico. Steve is also a decorated U.S. Air Force Captain, a pilot in the Vietnam war. I guess the old saying it is not what you have done lately but, what have you done for me now! Such as calling him a “RINO.” Has anyone been reading the news? Congressman Pearce stood steadfast by President Trump and was vocal in calling out voter fraud in spite of attacks from local media. He stood while real RINOs ran for cover!  Time and space prevent me from covering countless other comments or accusations.

An example of recent attacks and criticism was placing the defeat of Mark Moores squarely at the feet of our former Congressman-turned Chairman. I will point out many folks were upset when Moores was chosen by the State Central Committee. Some folks I talked to personally thought one of the others who stepped forward for the State Central Committee to choose from would have been a better fit and a stronger candidate. I am a State Central Committee member and delegate.  However, I didn’t have any say or vote in the First Congressional District race, nor did other delegates from Districts 2 or 3, nor did our Chairman have the ability to influence who would eventually run against Stansbury in the special election.

As a demonstration of our current Chairman’s ability to put people over politics, I wanted to share one story of the seemingly forgotten time when Steve was our Congressman. In 2013 we had a catastrophic forest fire in the Gila Forest — the Silver Fire.  It spanned several private ranches which included forest allotments. It wiped out acres of timber, wildlife, cattle, and improvements. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) initially took the stance that the ranchers /allotment owners were responsible for miles of burned fences.

We reached out to Congressman Pearce, as such a financial burden would likely be catastrophic for any operation.  Congressman Pearce took on the USFS, making the accurate case that the poor condition of the forest which led to fires was due to mismanagement by the USFS. A scheduled meeting in Truth or Consequences was the turning point when the Congressman came and stood shoulder to shoulder with a handful of ranchers.

Touching story, why is it pertinent today? Many politicians would have maybe written a letter or made a phone call as our numbers as constituents are not enough to make or break in votes during an election campaign.  That made no difference to the Congressman. He wanted to see the right thing done. Now, is Chairman Pearce perfect? No. He, as all of us, can always improve and better ourselves in our efforts for the party, our state, and our nation. The Republican Party of New Mexico (aka, the “Establishment”) has flaws and areas for improvement, just like any other organization.

It is imperative the two approaches put differences aside and see that RPNM needs the energy and new ideas only the grassroots can offer, just as the grassroots need the stability, infrastructure, and organization of the RPNM to mobilize its ranks. Our party is not and should not be in the business of picking favorites. That is what the primary process is for. Once a candidate prevails through the primary process, then our party should do everything it can to get them into office. I see, and continue to see, many good Conservative candidates often choose to vie for the same seat and have a very competitive primary. In a perfect world, we would spread our talent around to avoid these “competitive” primaries where we beat each other up while diluting precious resources. Although we don’t live in a perfect world, we can learn to not tear each other down but instead, rally around what we have in common. Let’s not waste effort fighting over the little we disagree on. Often our pride and selfish ambition stand in our way. For the sake of our state and nation, we must put aside our differences and work together.

The RPNM needs to work on finding ways to participate and help those working the grassroots efforts. Conversely, the grassroots would benefit in seeking ways to benefit from the RPNM’s infrastructure, resources, historical experience, and data to focus some of their energy into an effective movement to fight for our freedoms through the ballot box.  I know some efforts have been made which some were rebuffed or didn’t receive the desired reception. Could be that both groups might step back and get a look at the strengths the other brings to the effort.

These are age-old issues. Just as our founders found harnessing patriots who showed up to serve in the ranks of our Continental Army, pulling together is often easier said than done with independent, hard-working, self-reliant people who made up the ranks that stepped forward to free us from a tyrannical government. Our founders and patriots were able to pull together to become the fighting force that defeated the greatest standing army in the world at that time despite being very independent states with fiercely independent citizens.

To defeat the British, both sides saw that they must choose to work together to win. Today, our ranks are still filled with independent, hard-working people who seek to stand and fight for freedom. Just like our forefathers did, we must come together for the sake of freedom. Our children and grandchildren depend on us to do nothing short of that.

“One man with courage makes a majority.” – President Andrew Jackson

Fourth Republican, ex-Gary Johnson staffer Tim Walsh, running for governor

On Wednesday, Tim Walsh of Albuquerque announced his candidacy for governor, making him the fourth Republican candidate after Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block of Rio Rancho, businesswoman Karen Bedonie of Mexican Springs, and financier Greg Zanetti of Albuquerque to declare his candidacy.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, Walsh “previously worked as an education adviser to former Gov. Gary Johnson and described himself as cut from the same political cloth as the ex-governor.”

Gary Johnson is a Republican-turned Libertarian who believes in policies like unregulated abortions on-demand and opposing the free speech Supreme Court decision Citizens United v. FEC

Walsh says he wants to dismantle the State’s pension system and replace it with a 401(k) model, as well as decommission the Rail Runner commuter train.

The Journal reports, “A North Dakota native, Walsh has worked for the Mayo Clinic’s business office and as a city councilor in Minnesota.”

“‘I’d like to see this state grow in a positive manner,’ said Walsh, who added his Cabinet would include a mix of Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians and independents.”

“I’m not an insider,” Walsh said. “I’m not a (political) party individual.”

Incumbent scandal-ridden Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is seeking a second term after a rocky tenure, where she repeatedly skirted her own rules and forced the Legislature to ram through extremist legislation, paid off $62,500 to an ex-staffer who she was accused of groping, among countless other controversies.

New Mexico redistricting commission members revealed

On Friday, the names of most of the New Mexico redistricting commission members were revealed, with Democrat retired New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Edward Chávez, who was initially appointed to the Court by embattled Democrat Gov. Bill Richardson, being tapped as the commission’s chairman of the seven-person panel, which is set to draw district boundaries to present to the Legislature.

Other members joining the committee include State Demographer Robert Rhatigan and teacher Joaquin Sanchez, both of which are not registered to vote with any major party.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, “Rhatigan is director of Geospatial and Population Studies at the University of New Mexico, where his work gives him a strong background in census data and map-making. Sanchez is a former engineer who now works as a math and special education teacher at Robert F. Kennedy Charter High School.”

Republican New Mexico Senate Leader Greg Baca (R-Valencia) chose Albuquerque attorney Christopher Saucedo, a New Mexico State University regent to be on the committee, while Democrat Senate Pro Tem Mimi Stewart chose former Democrat state Sen. Lisa Curtis and Democrat House Speaker Brian chose disgraced former state Sen. Michael Sanchez to serve on the panel. Republican House Leader Jim Townsend has yet to make his selection for the seven-person panel.

In December, the New Mexico Legislature is likely to convene to hash out differences on the committee’s proposed legislative maps. The new “independent” process is a proposal set to “limit political influence over the once-a-decade drawing of district maps for Congress and the Legislature,” according to the Journal.

The redistricting panel bill passed in the last hours of the 2021 Legislature as a brokered deal between Democrat and Republican leaders to get the proposal to the finish line.

Previously on a Zoom call with a left-wing group, Retake Our Democracy, Egolf blasted the idea of an independent redistricting commission, saying, “I think that it puts at unacceptable peril a woman’s right to choose, environmental protection, fairness in taxation.” He added, “It puts at tremendous peril all of the progressive causes that we care about.”

During a House Judiciary Committee hearing, Speaker Egolf continually whined about Republicans “casting aspersions” that he did not want a fair redistricting process, demanding an apology from Republicans, including GOP Leader Jim Townsend (R-Chaves, Eddy, and Otero). He did not end up getting one, as Egolf has constantly worked to favor Democrats in the redistricting process and only recently joined Sen. Ivey-Soto’s last-ditch redistricting bill to install a more political way of redrawing district maps. After the meeting, Rep. Stefani Lord (R-Bernalillo, Sandoval & Santa Fe) wrote, “We will NEVER apologize for standing up for the people of New Mexico!”
