The University of New Mexico (UNM) has found itself at the center of a growing national debate after it began rolling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This shift comes in response to new federal guidance aimed at dismantling discriminatory practices that, under the guise of equity, have promoted race-based preferences, undermining the American principle of equal opportunity for all.

Eric Rodriguez, a student at UNM, admitted to the Santa Fe New Mexican that he might not have made it into the university on merit alone. “Maybe none of this would have happened,” he said, reflecting on his admission, which was aided by policies favoring Hispanic applicants and scholarships based on race (a moot point since New Mexico is a majority minority state). Now, with these systems being phased out, Rodriguez expressed uncertainty about the future for students like him. However, the real question is why anyone—regardless of background—should feel entitled to admission based on race instead of merit and character.

UNM’s decision follows a February 14 directive from the U.S. Department of Education warning schools to eliminate DEI-based admissions and employment criteria or risk losing federal funding. UNM President Garnett Stokes responded to criticism by saying that “adapting to new legal frameworks is not submission; it is a mechanism … to identify new paths for meeting our mission and achieving our goals while remaining compliant with federal law.” Her stance underscores a basic reality: no public institution can expect to retain federal dollars while willfully violating federal standards rooted in fairness and colorblind equality.

While the change has provoked backlash from left-wing student groups and faculty unions, it is a necessary and commendable course correction. Hundreds protested outside UNM’s Scholes Hall during a “National Day of Action,” accusing the school of “capitulating” to conservative political pressure. But what they fail to recognize is that DEI, as implemented, has become a thinly veiled system of racial favoritism—one that punishes individuals based on immutable characteristics like race or gender while rewarding others under the false pretense of justice.

Steph Flores of the UNM Graduate and Professional Student Association demanded that administrators not just “say” they support minority students but show it. However, true support must come through fostering academic excellence and personal responsibility—not permanent reliance on identity-based handouts.

Notably, critics like Mark Campbell of Students for Justice in Palestine brushed off funding concerns, mocking UNM’s financial limitations. Yet, unlike billion-dollar institutions like Harvard, UNM’s endowment sits at around $500 million—hardly an excess cushion to risk over ideological posturing. Harvard may indulge in defiance, but UNM seems to be prioritizing fiscal survival.

Even allegations of visa revocations for international students have been weaponized by protest organizers without evidence, revealing how far the outrage machine will go to prop up failed DEI programs.

President Trump’s administration and its ideological heirs are not attempting to strip rights away—they are working to restore a system based on merit, equality under the law, and individual dignity. Programs that treat people differently because of their race are not progressive; they are regressive and unconstitutional.

Vasquez claims it’s racist to criticize his extreme far-left record

In a recent Roll Call interview, New Mexico Democrat Rep. Gabe Vasquez attempted to reframe growing criticism of his radical political record, claiming it stems from his identity as a “Hispanic male.” He told the publication, “They used misinformation to paint me as an extremist,” adding, “I think so much of that was really … them wanting to discredit me as a Hispanic male.”

But as scrutiny of his positions intensifies, the facts show Vasquez is far from the moderate image he attempts to portray — instead aligning himself with some of the most extreme factions in Congress on issues ranging from border security to energy policy.

Vasquez represents New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District — a vast, working-class, majority Latino district in the southern and western part of the state that President Trump carried in 2024. Yet despite the district’s conservative lean, Vasquez has toed the party line with shocking consistency. According to Roll Call, “a CQ Roll Call analysis of his 2024 voting record found that on votes that split the parties, Vasquez stuck with House Democrats 87.2 percent of the time.” Even more strikingly, “on House votes on which President Joe Biden took a position, Vasquez sided with him 91.7 percent of the time.” Only 57 House Democrats voted with Biden more often.

That makes Vasquez one of the most extreme partisan members in a seat that is supposed to be one of the most competitive in the country. And despite running as a “moderate,” his record tells a different story.

Vasquez has attacked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and called to dismantle the southern border wall. “Time to take down the wall that’s been financed and is being constructed with illegal funds,” he said in a now-deleted tweet. He has harshly criticized law enforcement agencies charged with border security, all while falsely claiming to be a pragmatist on immigration.

His views on energy are no less radical. While the 2nd District is home to the oil- and gas-rich Permian Basin — one of the largest energy-producing regions in the world — Vasquez has aligned himself with Green New Deal-style policies that threaten the livelihoods of thousands. Although he has occasionally paid lip service to oilfield jobs, his consistent support for environmental restrictions and climate change mandates sends a clear message. Roll Call quoted him saying: “I’m not here to take any of that away. What I am here to do is to say, ‘How can we do this better? How can we do this cleaner?’” — a phrase that many in the industry view as code for more regulations and fewer jobs.

In addition to his troubling policy stances, Vasquez’s personal history also includes legal red flags. He failed to appear in court for driving without a license, resulting in an outstanding arrest warrant that remained active for over a decade until March 2024 — after he was elected to Congress. This negligence raises questions about his respect for the law and accountability.

On gun rights, Vasquez has also taken a far-left turn. After a shooting in Las Cruces, he used the tragedy to call for sweeping federal gun control laws, including mandatory gun storage laws that many believe violate Second Amendment protections.

While Roll Call portrays him as trying to avoid “conflict with Republicans or folks who voted for Trump,” Vasquez undermines his own case with his hyper-partisan voting record and out-of-step positions. Still, he blames Republican attacks on his background: “They used misinformation to paint me as an extremist,” he told Roll Call, adding, “I think so much of that was really… them wanting to discredit me as a Hispanic male.”

But in a district that has flipped five times since 2008 and was carried by Donald Trump in 2024, voters are less likely to be concerned about Vasquez’s ethnicity than his record of extremism. With the National Republican Congressional Committee targeting the seat in 2026 and local GOP leaders calling the district “definitely flippable,” Vasquez’s far-left record may prove politically toxic.

As Roll Call notes, “The strategy that Vasquez should take as a Democrat in a Trump district would be exactly what he’s doing: filtering out the national scandals and focusing on what he can do for [his] constituents.” Yet, with his policies consistently aligned with the most progressive elements in Washington, voters in New Mexico’s 2nd District may soon decide that what Vasquez is doing is not what they want.

Keller’s new ‘equity consultant’ says military is ‘home of White supremacy’

Albuquerque is undergoing a significant “culture change” in its government, with critical race theory playing a central role, aided by a far-left equity consultant.

After being elected in 2017, Albuquerque Democrat Mayor Tim Keller vowed to reform the government with “antiracist” principles. “From Day One of our administration, we knew that inequity was growing and that we would have to change the culture,” Keller said. “When has learning and growing ever been comfortable?”

In March 2018, Keller established the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI) to realize his vision of racial equity. The OEI introduced trainings on critical race theory, which made some employees uncomfortable, according to the office’s director in a 2021 report.

Among the equity consultants hired was Zamil Salhab from RACED Consulting, who holds far-left views, including the belief that the U.S. military is the “home of White supremacy.” Salhab is described on the RACED Consulting website as a “genderqueer first-generation American and Post 9-11 veteran.”

Salhab shared his experiences in June 2020, stating, “Being first generation and being black, being queer. And then to go into what I believe is the home of White supremacy and patriarchy, the military. Little did I realize like what damage… I was doing to myself and what I’d have to go through in order to deconstruct myself after getting out of the service,” Salhab said. “Because society not only teaches that Black bodies are less than… And so and then to be a woman. So to deal with those different intersectionalities of the White supremacy construct, it was, you know, for a period of time I thought I was nuts, I thought I was crazy.”

The city confirmed that “The Office of Equity and Inclusion contracted with RACED Consulting LLC.”

RACED Consulting specializes in topics such as “white fragility” and “De-Centering Whiteness,” according to its website. The firm aims to explore the impact of white fragility on building racially inclusive practices.

Despite the extensive CRT training for lower-level employees, the 2021 city report noted the absence of department directors and city leadership from these sessions. The report emphasized the need for a comprehensive investment in the Culture Change Initiative at all levels of government.

Michelle Melendez, the director of OEI, acknowledged some resistance to Keller’s racial agenda. “We also see a small but vocal resistance to addressing racism,” she said. “Systemic racism is one of the root causes of some of our most serious challenges, and addressing it within municipal government will make our city better for the long-term. That’s culture change.”

The report also highlighted an increased understanding and openness to discussions about anti-racism and social justice.

As part of the cultural shift, each department received a DEI staffer to conduct “equity assessments.” These liaisons underwent over 10 months of training to prepare for their roles. The report noted the challenges of shifting institutional culture but acknowledged progress made by those who completed the training.

Various departments, including animal welfare, environmental health, transit, and the police department, developed their own “racial equity action plans” to assess their practices, policies, expenditures, and resource distribution.

Before Keller’s election in 2017, employees were “reluctant to talk openly about race, racism,” according to OEI Director Melendez. The Culture Change Initiative has been pivotal in building the city’s capacity to work towards equitable outcomes.

Both RACED Consulting and the City of Albuquerque did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

‘Chris, the n—er’: Police report unmasks Vasquez’s racist, violent past

In the summer of 2004, an incident occurred at a call center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, that has resurfaced in the form of a police report obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The report details a disturbing phone call received by a human resources employee at Research Data Design, a now-defunct consulting business. The caller, identified by the employee as former worker Gabe Vasquez, used a racial slur to ask for “Chris” before hanging up and calling back to ask for “Chris, the black man,” laughing before disconnecting.

Gabe Vasquez, now a Democratic congressman representing New Mexico’s second district, was a former employee of the company who had been terminated for falsifying data. The police report from 2004, which was obtained through a public records request, confirms the identification of Vasquez as the caller. A city records custodian verified that Vasquez was the suspect in the report, although his name is redacted in the document.

This revelation stands in stark contrast to Vasquez’s public persona. In 2020, Vasquez, a progressive Democrat and supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, called for the dismantling of oppressive systems harming Black people. During his 2022 congressional campaign, he urged supporters to celebrate Juneteenth, recognizing the contributions of Black Americans. Additionally, he has frequently criticized others for racist behavior, including comparing the Trump administration to the Ku Klux Klan.

Despite the serious nature of these allegations, Vasquez has not responded to requests for comment. The police report, part of a series of documents obtained from Las Cruces city records, includes other incidents involving Vasquez during his time at New Mexico State University from 2002 to 2008. These records detail arguments with a girlfriend and arrests for marijuana possession.

The 2004 police report describes how the human resources employee at Research Data Design called Vasquez to inform him of her intention to report the harassment to the police. Following this warning, no further calls were received. The report lists the offense under a statute that criminalizes the use of a telephone to intimidate or harass, but the case was suspended in 2008 without any charges against Vasquez.

“At approximately 1600 hours he called Research Data Design and she answered the phone,” the police report says. “She stated that the person asked, ‘Is Chris there?’ She said, ‘Who, which Chris?’ as apparently there are a number of Chrises there and he said, ‘Chris, the n—er.’ She hung up,” the police report read.

Vasquez’s past interactions with law enforcement include a domestic dispute in 2007 where police responded to a possible domestic situation at his home and a 2005 incident where he was caught attempting to flush marijuana during a noise complaint investigation. Additionally, in 2002, Vasquez failed to appear in court for charges of driving without a license and insurance in El Paso, Texas, resulting in an arrest warrant executed just two months ago.

Following the shocking revelations, National Republican Congressional Committee Spokeswoman Delanie Bomar wrote, “This is unacceptable behavior from a Member of Congress. Gabe Vasquez clearly has a problem with authority and this pattern of behavior shows he is unfit to serve. Do Hakeem Jeffries and Vasquez’s House colleagues agree?”

“This is absolutely disqualifying behavior for a Member of Congress,” said the Congressional Leadership Fund’s  Regional Press Secretary Maureen O’Toole. “How can Democrats stand by after Gabe Vasquez hurled inexcusable racial slurs while harassing a former colleague? Will Democrats hold Vasquez accountable?”

Republican Former Congresswoman Yvette Herrell, the GOP nominee for the District, wrote, “Absolutely disgusting conduct. Let’s hold Gabe Vasquez accountable in November!”

Democrat legislator branded a ‘bigot’ over racially charged tweet

Far-left Democrat state Rep. Liz Thomson (D-Bernalillo), who is known for her radical and hate-filled statements, made a flurry of recent tweets bashing conservatives who did not support Obama, claiming it was because of the former president’s skin color.

On Saturday, Thomson shared a tweet that read, “What did Obama do that made Republicans hate him so much?” The lawmaker opined, “He was black.”

That resulted in many on social media calling her out for her bigoted statement, with one person calling her a “racist” and a “bigot.”

State Rep. Stefani Lord (R-Sandia Park) wrote in reply, “So by her (@lizthomsonnm) logic, if she doesn’t like, support, endorse, and vote for the Republican Lt Gov candidate, Ant Thornton (@The_NextLG), then she’s racist?” referring to the GOP lt. gov. nominee, who is Black. 

Thornton chimed in, “I’m so looking forward to receiving your vote in November!”

In another Tweet questioning why any gay people would be conservative, Thomson wrote, “I never understood being a Log Cabin Republican,” referring to the group made up of gay and lesbian conservatives.

Also over the weekend, Thomson shared scores of anti-Trump, anti-GOP tweets while also sharing conspiracy theories blaming inflation on rich people — not the true cause, which is due to Joe Biden’s economic policies. 

Thomson is the chairwoman of the House Health and Human Services Committee, despite her rabidly hateful tweets, some even comparing police officers to the KKK. She also claimed conservatives should be branded with a scarlet “S” for “seditionist.”

Far-left legislator compares police to the KKK, calls gun owners ‘thugs’

Over the past few days, far-left state Rep. Liz Thomson (D-Bernalillo) has been quite active on Twitter, showing her outrage toward Republicans and police officers, including sharing some very inappropriate content, some of which is incredibly demeaning to fellow citizens.

This week, Democrat legislators voted behind closed doors to ban New Mexicans from exercising their Second Amendment rights in the Roundhouse in Santa Fe, with only very few restrictions. The dark-room deal effectively banned all citizens and legislators from carrying firearms in the building without the express consent of the Speaker of the House, Brian Egolf (D-Santa Fe). 

In celebrating this anti-gun measure, Thomson shared Albuquerque radio producer Katie Stone’s tweet, which called gun owners “thugs.” Stone wrote, “I really appreciate the gun ban at the @NMLegislature. It’s been scary to be in crowded hearing chambers with armed thugs around. I’ve feared for my personal safety in the tense environment of the legislature when these men playing GI Joe show up. Thanks @senatorwirth.”

Thomson shared another post, this time from a Mike Bloomberg-funded “Moms Demand Action” gun-grabbing activist who claimed, “Often our @MomsDemand volunteers were intimidated by gun toting extremists at the NM Roundhouse. I would not take my daughter,” in an apparent attempt at stoking fear upon others. The endorsement of Thomson by sharing the post shows that she, too, believes legal gun owners are “gun-toting extremists.”

On another day, Thomson also shared hate speech against the police, comparing them to the Ku Klux Klan. The tweet Thomson shared came in response to news that New York police officers would be calling out following orders for their forcible inoculation, or else they would lose their jobs. This appears to be the regard Thomson has for law enforcers who work each day to protect communities — she compares them to the KKK.

She also called Republicans“racists” for opposing Critical Race Theory.

Thomson has long been known for her nasty and personal attacks against fellow New Mexicans, demeaning them as “uneducated” for asking questions about the virus jab and claiming in one rant, “Anyone who continues to back the orange traitor (apparently referring to President Donald Trump) after the terrorist attack, is forever branded with a scarlet S for seditionist.” 

She also called concerned parents asking questions about the jab for their kids “low iq voters.” Then, Thomson snitched on fellow citizens to the attorney general regarding pandemic mandates.

MLG’s draft PED social studies rules full of CRT, anti-Hispanic, anti-police sentiments

The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) recently published its draft social studies standards for teachers, which are chock-full of racist Critical Race Theory (CRT), anti-Hispanic hate, the “LGBTQI+” agenda, among other frightening curricula. 

The Michelle Lujan Grisham’s NMPED claims the current social studies standards “do not address the increasingly diverse perspectives and histories of the peoples of New Mexico.” The rules want students to demonstrate “respect for the feelings of people who are similar and different from me.”

The proposed rules weave in socialism, racism toward non-minority groups, extreme environmentalism, and globalism. These benchmarks have students “develop pride in his/her/their identity, history, culture, region by incorporating a community based approach while preparing students to be a part of a global environment.”

Students are to “[a]ssess how social policies and economic forces offer privilege or systemic inequity in accessing social, political, and economic opportunity for identity groups in education, government, healthcare, industry, and law enforcement,” writes one of the proposed rules, a key tenet of the racist Critical Race Theory. The rules ask students to assess this and to “Identify and analyze cultural, differently abled, ethnic, gender, national, political, racial, and religious identities and related perceptions and behaviors by society of these identities.” 

CRT is blatant in the rules, especially where the students are to learn how America is supposedly racist in its very framework. Students are to “[d]escribe how inequity in the United States laid the foundation for conflict that continues today.” 

The standards include alarming new benchmarks, specifically targeting Spanish settlers in the United States, writing regarding historical thinking that students should “Compare the patterns of exploration, destruction and occupation of the Americas by Spaniards.”

The proposed draft notes that it wants to “Demonstrate how diversity includes the impact of unequal power relations on the development of group identities and cultures” Regarding the territorial period of New Mexico, the rules aim to “Determine the role of race and racism in the acts of land redistribution during the territorial period.”

Also, students are to use “evidence from primary and secondary sources to compare and contrast the impacts of European colonization on Indigenous populations.”

The proposed curriculum appears to attempt to demonize conservatives, having students “Assess the short- and long-term social and political impacts of conservatism in the United States on diverse groups of people.” 

Also apparently demonized in the new curriculum are guns and gun owners. The rule states, that students are to “Examine the history of guns in America as compared to other world powers and the consequences of gun violence on American society past, present, and future.” 

Included in the proposed rule is a move to have students examine “anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States over time and the experiences of diverse immigrant groups past and present.” 

Action steps urged for students to take through the new social studies curriculum include the following: 

Create an action plan for a more just and equitable America for diverse groups of people including Native Americans and African Americans.

Evaluate the effects of the representation of diverse people in the US government including race,
gender, sexual orientation, and disability

The “civics” section of these rules includes benchmarks for students to “cite evidence investigating the relationships between equality, equity, justice, freedom, and order in American constitutional democracy.” The United States is a constitutional republic, not a “democracy.”

The Constitution is demonized for what groups are allegedly left out of it and students are to “determine which narratives were excluded from the original document; and use text evidence from the Bill of Rights and supporting texts to support a student developed argument by citing specific evidence to track whose rights were added over time.” 

Students are also to “Explore the movement against police brutality.” Also, they are to evaluate the “effects of diverse ideologies and the process of political socialization on oneself and society.” 

Regarding the environment, among many other factors, students are to analyze “US government policies to reduce climate disruption.”

As well, students must evaluate the economic framework of America, which the curriculum sheds in a bad light for its capitalist structure. They are to “[c]ritique inequalities that exist in economic systems.” while using “economic data to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of American capitalism in relationship to other economic systems.” 

These policies are full of new racist, anti-capitalist, anti-police, anti-gun, anti-conservative, anti-Hispanic, and anti-American sentiments while only mentioning the Constitution to claim it is a racist document full of “inequities.” This is the latest assault on education by the Lujan Grisham administration, but parents are urged to take action.

Meet the Democrats’ new racist NM House floor leader

On Tuesday, it was announced by the House Democrats that their caucus had elected far-left “social impact lawyer” state Rep. Javier Martinez (D-Bernalillo) to be their next floor leader succeeding former Rep. Sheryl Williams Stapleton (D-Bernalillo) being caught up in a large corruption investigation, resulting in her resignation. 

Martinez previously ran for floor leader but was unsuccessful. This time, the race-obsessed state representative won the support of his caucus, which has shifted far to the right over recent years.

Martinez is known for his harsh criticism of Republican policies, his support for far-left policies, such as abortion up-to-birth, the anti-police agenda, the “Green New Deal,” and higher taxes. Martinez also supports disrespecting the American flag.  

He also advocated for raiding the state’s Land Grant permanent fund for socialist policies. Martinez claimed the state is “racist” not for doing so sooner, writing, “Years of policies that uphold historically racist systems like..failures 2 invest land grant fund in youngest kids, failures 2 build water systems in communities w/out, failures 2 build an economy that works for ALL..are big part of reason why #Covid19 is hitting us the hardest.” 

Martinez believes in racist ideals, including that “one cannot be racist against White people,” which delegitimizes and silences the voices of white people in the state. If his sentiment was reversed and he said, “one cannot be racist against Black people” or “one cannot be racist against Hispanic people,” it would be very much a racist statement.

This makes Martinez the second openly racist floor leader the party has chosen, with Sheryl Williams Stapleton disparaging Mexican Americans, calling the former Gov. Susana Martinez “the Mexican on the fourth floor,” which she was forced to apologize for saying. 

Martinez supports illegal aliens being teachers in schools and socialist universal basic income. 

“I look forward to the increased responsibility and opportunity of this role to move our caucus, Legislature, and state forward in a way that’s truly representative of New Mexico’s diverse communities,” said Martinez after being elected Democrat House floor leader.
