COVID-19

Together apart

We’ve always known the risks associated with congregating in crowds, but we’ve pushed them to the back of our minds. Handshakes, kissing, drinking from the same glass, and sneezing and coughing indiscriminately have led to the spread of germs ever since God was in short pants. We’ve endured plagues like the Black Death in the 14th century. That one killed around 50 million people. The Bubonic Plague of the 17th century hit Italy hard, killing over a quarter-million people and nearly half the population of Verona. London, too, was hit hard in the same century. At the plague’s peak, there, nearly 8,000 people/week were killed, ending up with a total of 100,000 victims.

In 1720, a merchant ship sailed into the harbor of Marseille in France carrying what was called, ‘mortal distemper’ from the Middle East. The ship was quarantined, but the owner persuaded the authorities to offload its cargo, unleashing plague-carrying rat fleas into the unsuspecting population. The result…one hundred thousand people dead in southern France.

Fast forward to the 19th century and the Chinese province of Yunnan, and what is known as the ‘Third Pandemic’ erupted there and spread viciously throughout the globe for the next several decades. Rats ended up carrying the plague to six continents. Most of the devastation took place in China and India, but places like San Francisco were also affected.

In the 20th century, more specifically from 1918-1920, the ‘Spanish Flu’ infected a half-billion people around the world which was 27% of the world’s population at the time. The mortality rate from that flu was estimated to be from 17 million to as many as 50 million. Some estimates even put the death toll at 100 million! There have been many theories about where the flu originated, northern China being one of them, but wherever it came from, its killing effect was mind-blowing.

Here in America, we have experienced measles epidemics, tuberculosis, and polio outbreaks, not to mention the devastating HIV scourge in the 20th century. In the last 30 years or so, we’ve seen the Swine Flu, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the Ebola outbreak and now, the Coronavirus which is dramatically changing the way we are forced to live our lives. While great strides have been made in virology and in the downstream advances in vaccine discoveries, there are two things that we Americans haven’t confronted, adequately. The first is our poor institutional memory. (Institutional memory is the collective knowledge and learned experiences of a group like our entire non-scientific population. As the turnover of new generations occurs among our population these concepts must be transitioned…and they have not been.)

The second is our ignorance of the fact that our bodies are not invulnerable. Just because we have managed to conquer some diseases or mitigate their effects on us through advances in medicine, we have convinced ourselves that we can somehow skirt the inevitability of large-scale epidemics and pandemics. Those two things have made us more vulnerable to disease as has our unwillingness to prepare for such diseases and properly plan for their arrival. Our healthcare system, especially our emergency healthcare preparedness system, has been inadequate throughout many Administrations and didn’t start with Donald Trump nor his predecessors.

We’ve become so convinced of our own ability to ‘tackle anything that comes our way’ that we have simply failed to acknowledge our own mortal weaknesses. Having said that, it does no good to invoke old aphorisms like “Those who do not remember (or heed) the past are doomed to repeat it.” We must deal with our failings now. The onset of the Coronavirus must be the catalyst for us to re-examine our approach to many things. Globalization is one of them.

The ‘enlightened’ politicians of the post-WWII era believed that the only sane way to avoid new wars was to reject the monopolistic and imperialistic tendencies that led to many of those wars. The way to do that was to shrink the space between cultures and make the world smaller and its economies more interdependent. They did this by pushing a one-world ethos based on globalization.

Enter NATO, the European Economic Community (now European Union), a strengthening of the U.N., a reduction in global trading barriers through the WTO and other organizations along with multi-lateral and bi-lateral trading pacts. Couple them with billions of dollars of international investments, the linking of world currencies, the opening up of new markets, vastly improved travel possibilities and improved digital communication along with the imposition of a one-world trading language (English) and globalization became the world’s new religion.

Hundreds of millions of non-business travelers spent billions flying or sailing to new exotic destinations and bringing back with them not only impressions of new cultures but goods purchased in over one hundred countries. This led to increased demand for not only new products (which importers were only too happy to accommodate) but also prompted American companies to reduce their costs by investing in manufacturing or assembly of familiar U.S. products, overseas.

This contract manufacturing included a wide range of products that were now bearing the ‘Made in China’ label. Pharmaceuticals were one of them. While this offshore manufacturing decreased costs for some medicines it also created a dependency for many antibiotics, some of which are now going to be in short supply due to the shutdown of some Chinese factories. The result is that globalization has shown itself to be the ultimate double-edged sword.

Americans – indeed the whole world’s people – are now discovering the unpleasant edge of that sword and are now being forced to accept the downside associated with that dependency. Our current state of national emergency is a graphic reminder of the inescapable cause and effect our decisions have and of the real consequences of ‘togetherness.’ As we sequester ourselves away with ‘social distancing,’ avoiding congregating in large numbers and concentrating on those closest to us, we actually have a golden opportunity to re-examine our ways and our choices both as individuals and as a country. There is not a better time than now to do so.

Las Cruces bishop first in U.S. to resume Mass as MLG’s State Police hunt down church ban defiers

On Wednesday, Las Cruces Bishop Peter Baldacchino advised his priests to resume their ministry, in accordance with state-ordered health guidelines, making it clear he does not agree with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s order of no more than five people congregating in one place.

“We [as priests] have been called by Christ and ordained to serve the people of the Diocese of Las Cruces, to bring them hope and consolation during this difficult time,” Baldacchino wrote.

“In the events of these days and weeks the Lord is calling us out of our comfort zone, he is calling us to seek new ways to reach the people. In addition to this mission with which we are entrusted, we also have the mission to keep people safe. The two must be equally pursued.”

“While it is true that we need to take every reasonable precaution to reduce the spread of Coronavirus, it is equally true that we offer the greatest ‘essential service’ to our people. The past few weeks have brought to light many unintended consequences of the ‘stay-at-home’ order,” he continued.

According to the Catholic News Agency, “Baldacchino is the first U.S. bishop known to have amended a previously declared diocesan ban on public Masses since the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the U.S. last month.”

The news comes amid Gov. Lujan Grisham sending State Police out to hunt down people of faith who are defying her ban on church gatherings announced the day before Easter Sunday.

In the Governor’s announcement of the ban, she said she wanted to make clear that “home is also holy,” mentioning the Jewish Passover and the Islamic Ramadan as other holy occasions. The announcement just so happened to come out the same day the Albuquerque Journal published an op-ed from a leftist columnist who harassed an elderly pro-life man, where she echoed much of the same language in the piece.

Audio obtained by KIVA 93.7 FM/1600 AM’s “Rock of Talk” host Eddy Aragon, shows state police calling churches, saying they’ve had “complaints” that the churches have remained open, and they must suspend all gatherings immediately.

In once call from an “Officer Price” to the New Hope Revival Church, he informs the church they are “non-essential and this business should be closed down until further notice until this epidemic is over and completed.”

Another call from Gov Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office to Pastor Jeff Carr of Mesa Baptist Church in Rio Rancho informs the church of the Governor’s order while giving guidelines that are supported, including “online services, drive-in services where people remain in the car with their windows rolled up… or listen to a radio service, honk their horns for ‘Amen!’ and so on.”

On Monday, Legacy Church in Albuquerque filed a lawsuit against the State of New Mexico claiming Gov. Lujan Grisham violated the First Amendment protecting their freedom of religion. Head Pastor Steve Smothermon said, “Really what I consider a very egregious act on her part that at 5 o’clock on Saturday she puts out this new order for churches basically not making churches essential when they were before, and she does it on the eve of Easter.”

On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General William Barr issued a statement on social distancing and religious practices in light of a church in Greenville, Mississippi where congregants were fined $500 for participating in a church service from their cars. “Even in times of emergency, when reasonable and temporary restrictions are placed on rights, the First Amendment and federal statutory law prohibit discrimination against religious institutions and religious believers,” wrote Barr.

The Las Cruces Bishop’s decision to resume Catholic mass services will test what lengths Gov. Lujan Grisham is willing to go to clamp down on religious believers practicing their faith, as she is allegedly a member of the Catholic faith.

NM leaders respond with outrage after MLG bans church services on eve of Easter

On Saturday evening, the eve of the Easter holiday, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced she is banning all religious gatherings of five people or more.

Despite many church services already canceling their Easter gatherings, Lujan Grisham rescinded her previous exception for religious services, writing, “absolutely clear that mass gatherings of any type are not permitted in houses of worship.”

“We know that you want to practice your faith, as you should. But this year we must remember that home is holy. The best thing you can do for your community is to stay there,” she continued.

But many New Mexico leaders did not take kindly to the Governor’s unilateral decision to ban people from practicing their faith on Easter, citing that her limit of only five people gathering would cripple churches planning on streaming live online services which would require more than five people to put together.

House Republican Whip Rep. Rod Montoya wrote in a statement, “Governor, despite what you think, these services are essential! To make this decision the day before Easter is egregious.  I am advising churches across our state to continue to produce and offer online services going forward; this order today cannot and will not stand.”

Rep. David Gallegos wrote on Facebook on Saturday, “With just a few hours to go before Easter Sunday, the Governor’s office sent out an emergency executive order adding churches and places of worship to her list of banned mass gatherings. It’s impossible for churches to produce services they can film or livestream with 5 people or less in a room. Doing this the day before Easter is just the wrong thing to do. We need to stand up to the Governor. She has gone too far.”

While NM fights COVID-19 pandemic, Martin Heinrich fights to kill babies through abortion

On Thursday, Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM), took to Twitter to proclaim his dissatisfaction with the $2 trillion stimulus bill passed by Congress in mid-March to provide relief to those affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Heinrich shared a left-wing article in the New Mexico Political Report (a news website run by far-left abortion up-to-birth ProgressNow NM), which claimed the $2 trillion economic package “take[s] a swipe” at the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

According to the article, “buried deep within the nearly 1,000 page bill is language designed to take a swipe at Planned Parenthood. Businesses and nonprofits seeking relief money will have to go through the Trump Administration’s Small Business Association—and the agency has the ability to refuse the nonprofit organization, according to Vice. Anti-abortion lawmakers claimed it as a ‘win’ against abortion rights.” It should be noted that Heinrich voted for the aid package.

As the nation copes with the ramifications of the deadly pandemic, Heinrich appears to have access to kill babies through abortions at the top of his agenda, before all else.

“Health centers like [Planned Parenthood] are a vital resource for preventive and primary care for women across the country, especially in rural communities. I’ll always fight to protect women’s health against these efforts to undermine reproductive health care,” wrote Heinrich.

During the 2018 election cycle, Heinrich received at least $151,131.93 from abortion, with $74,261.93 coming from California Planned Parenthood organizations, $40,000 from Planned Parenthood’s New York action fund, $520 from the group’s Minnesota action fund, $35,000 from DC-based national Planned Parenthood Action Fund, among smaller individual contributions from abortionist Shannon Carr of Albuquerque’s Southwestern Women’s Options late-term abortion clinic ($100), and Annette Cummings of Planned Parenthood Federation of America ($1,250). All of these figures are according to the Federal Election Commission.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has closed all businesses deemed “non-essential,” threatening them with citations if they do not comply. Lujan Grisham has also denied health care facilities to perform elective procedures. However, abortion facilities remain wide open, despite abortion being an elective procedure. As of April 9, New Mexico has 989 cases of COVID-19, with 17 coronavirus-related deaths.

In February, Martin Heinrich voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which would give basic health care to an infant who survives a botched abortion. By voting against the measure, his vote appears to show his support for infanticide, as well as just simply abortion.

In 2018, Heinrich claimed anyone who opposes the unlimited killing of babies up to the date of their birth is “sexist.”

MLG threatens ‘non-essential’ businesses if they stay open—pot shops, abortions deemed ‘essential’

On Wednesday, Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham threatened citations by New Mexico State Police to businesses if they do not comply with her strict mandate to close if they are deemed “non-essential” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lujan Grisham has also reinforced her stay-at-home order, which she says is germane to “aggressively minimiz[ing] person-to-person contact.”

Lujan Grisham even went so far as to give some attitude to a constituent criticizing her relentless emergency texts.

On Facebook, Lujan Grisham wrote, “New Mexico’s emergency public health order WILL be enforced. Non-essential businesses that fail to comply will be cited by the New Mexico State Police.”

Despite Lujan Grisham’s “aggressive” actions by forcing the closure of businesses, she considers abortion clinics, including late-term abortion facility Southwestern Women’s Options offering to kill babies through 32 weeks (seven months) gestation. Also included in her definition of “essential” businesses are pot dispensaries.

It should be noted that Lujan Grisham received tens of thousands of dollars from the marijuana and abortion industries. As of August 2018, Lujan Grisham received $29,000 from the pot industry, with $11,000 of that originating from former Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White’s business, “PurLife.”

During the 2018 election, Lujan Grisham received at least $8,000 from abortionist Curtis Boyd and his surrogates of Southwestern Women’s Options abortion clinic, $11,000 from abortion up-to-birth dark money advocacy group EMILY’s List, and at least $3,500 from Planned Parenthood, according to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office. Her abortion contributions totaled over $22,5000.

Lujan Grisham has allowed big corporate box stores to remain open, with Walmart giving the Governor $2,500 during the 2018 election cycle and $5,000 in 2019.

As time passes, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s orders are getting stricter and stricter, as small businesses are hanging by a thread. Albuquerque’s “The Cooperage” restaurant is closing its doors for good.

Lujan Grisham’s leadership style is drastically different than other governors, such as South Dakota’s Gov. Kristi Noem, who is not forcing a mandated stay-at-home order.

Kellyanne Conway says MLG thanked President Trump for his response to COVID-19

On Wednesday, while speaking on Fox News’ morning show “Fox & Friends,” Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway confirmed that New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham thanked President Trump and the COVID-19 task force, and gave credit for the President’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conway said Lujan Grisham and other Democrat leaders were “thanking the president, the vice president of the task force, and then making specific asks. There are no politics for them on that phone call. They’re saying thank you so much for the federal government’s response.”

The news comes after President Trump announced that New Mexico would receive its request for a U.S. Army field hospital in Albuquerque, complete with 284 beds to help with the state’s response to the coronavirus.

Shortly after taking office, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham brutally criticized President Trump, even going so far as to run through a wall to protest the President’s plan to build a southern border wall to prevent illegal activity and immigration.

Gavin Clarkson has a plan to make China pay for COVID-19

On Monday, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Gavin Clarkson released an op-ed in the Washington Examiner outlining a strategy for China to pay for the COVID-19 epidemic.

Clarkson cites a study that shows if China had acted just three weeks earlier, it could have reduced 95% of COVID-19 cases. But a new government report released Wednesday allegedly proves what many have suspected: China lied about how bad the virus was, and thus caused tens of thousands of casualties across the globe.

Clarkson’s plan to get China to pay for the Chinese virus begins with a recommendation to President Trump and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to immediately extract reimbursement, starting with the $1.1 trillion in U.S. Treasury Department bonds Communist China currently holds.

The Washington Examiner piece contends that President Trump’s national emergency declaration on March 13, 2020, due to COVID-19 triggers additional powers, namely the ability to confiscate foreign assets under 50 USC § 1702(a)(1)(C). “Pursuant to that statute, seized assets can then be liquidated and the proceeds used to further the interests of the United States. Under my proposal, FSIA immunity is irrelevant,” writes Clarkson.

Clarkson shows that such action has precedent, such as the United States’ actions with Iran, where the Supreme Court upheld Congress’s authority to prevent Iran from suing in Bank Markazi v. Peterson, 136 S. Ct. 1310 (2016).

Under Clarkson’s plan, the U.S. Treasury should “electronically confiscate all U.S. Treasurys currently held by China and make it illegal for China to buy, hold, or sell U.S. Treasuries going forward.” Under the action, these prohibitions would apply to any subsidiary or agent of China’s Communist Party.

Because U.S. Treasury bonds are recorded electronically, “with just a few keystrokes” the bonds can be confiscated by the Depository Trust Corporation, as the paper notes can be marked no longer valid.

Clarkson’s out-of-the-box idea shows how the United States can pay for essentially half of the $2.2 trillion COVID-19 relief bill passed last week through COngress, as well as reprimand China for their irresponsibility handling the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump: The ‘Lamestream Media is going CRAZY’ over huge daily COVID-19 press conference ratings

On Sunday, President Trump took to Twitter to point out how the liberal media is “going CRAZY” over the news of gigantic ratings on his daily COVID-19 press briefings.

Trump cites a New York Times article that shows his press conferences are getting Bachelor Season Finale and Monday Night Football-type ratings

“Because the “Ratings” of my News Conferences etc. are so high, “Bachelor finale, Monday Night Football type numbers” according to the @nytimes, the Lamestream Media is going CRAZY. “Trump is reaching too many people, we must stop him.” said one lunatic,” wrote Trump.

According to the Times’ piece, “On Monday, nearly 12.2 million people watched Mr. Trump’s briefing on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC, according to Nielsen — “Monday Night Football” numbers.”

A subsequent Twitter thread from the President cites the Times article in greater detail.

President Trump’s Sunday press conference will happen at 5:00 P.M. Eastern time.

Biden has another gaffe: calls COVID-19 the ‘Lujan Virus’

On Friday, former vice president and current Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden held a live conversation with various workers on the frontlines combating COVID-19. During the conversation, Biden made another gaffe, this time claiming President Trump’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insists on calling the novel Chinese virus the “Luhan Virus.”

Biden was trying to say “Wuhan,” which is the province where the deadly Coronavirus spawned. According to recent research, the virus originated from a shrimp vendor in a market in the Wuhan region.

It just so happens there are two elected officials whose last names are phonetically the same as Biden’s “Luhan Virus” gaffe. Those officials include Democrat New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democrat U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján (CD-3).

Ironically, Lujan Grisham could be on Biden’s shortlist for vice presidential picks, among other female politicians, such as Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI).

Haaland, Luján exploit Coronavirus pandemic to raise campaign cash, blame Trump for crisis

This week, some of New Mexico’s far-left congressional Democrat delegation has been relishing in the suffering brought forth by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, using it as an opportunity to blame President Trump for the crisis while shamelessly fundraising for their 2020 campaigns.

Rep. Deb Haaland (CD-1) sent out an email entitled, “Trump’s inability to lead our country,” which outlined the far-left policies he has not adopted. Her apparent argument is that because President Trump is against the socialist Obama-era “Affordable Care Act” or “Obamacare,” he has “systematically debilitated our country’s ability to respond to public health crises.”

At the end of Haaland’s email, she includes multiple buttons in amounts from $10 t0 $250+ asking for “express” donations to her campaign so she can reach her arbitrary “March fundraising goal.”

On Tuesday, Rep. Ben Ray Luján (CD-1), who is pursuing a promotion to the U.S. Senate, sent out a long-winded fundraising email claiming President Trump ignored “dire warning signs about the severity of this outbreak.” The baseless claims come despite the President acting immediately upon news of the virus to restrict travel from China and declare a public health emergency.

Of course, the pitch came with an ask for campaign cash, justifying it as “doing [one’s] part” in these “difficult times.” The email follows previous solicitations using Coronavirus. One email preyed on seniors, making the false claim that President Trump is trying to rip away their Social Security checks.

As well as Haaland’s shameless COVID-19 campaign email, she posted a video on her Facebook page asking for money during the crisis, writing in the description of the video, “We as Democrats believe in things like paid sick leave, healthcare for all, and workers’ rights. That fight now more than ever has never been more critical. Join our grassroots movement and pitch in $5 today!”

Ben Ray Luján’s email pitch.
Deb Haaland’s email pitch

Luján’s and Haaland’s emails come amid a tense battle in the U.S. Senate, where Democrats have stalled an emergency funding bill that would help lift American workers and businesses during the pandemic. Pelosi and Democrat leaders have weaponized the funding bill as an “opportunity” to ram through parts of the “Green New Deal,” abortion funding, among other items completely unrelated to COVID-19.
