$3.7M in public money for abortions? NM’s Medicaid mystery exposed

Under the rule of Democrat Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico’s Medicaid-funded abortion program continues to operate under a shroud of secrecy, according to a recent investigation by Abortion Free New Mexico, according to Life News. The pro-life watchdog group filed an Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) request on February 6, 2025, seeking a detailed breakdown of abortions paid for by New Mexico Medicaid between 2022 and 2024. The response they received from the New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) was described as “unprofessional, unclear and incomplete.”

The request, submitted by Tara Shaver, spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico, asked for five specific data points: the total amount paid for abortions by Medicaid, the number and type (chemical or surgical) of procedures, the providers involved, gestational ages, and how many abortions were performed on undocumented immigrants. Instead of providing a full accounting, the HCA replied with a vague one-sentence response: “The New Mexico Health Care Authority, $2,980,083.31 was paid in PregTerm through 2022-2024. The New Mexico Health Care Authority does not have documents responsive to the remainder of this request.”

After continued inquiries, the HCA revised the total to over $3.7 million—$3,768,818.32—highlighting a troubling inconsistency in state reporting. A follow-up letter on April 16, 2025, revealed that 2024 had the highest amount of Medicaid funds used for abortion services. Yet key details—such as the number of procedures and provider information—remain concealed.

“This is unfortunately the norm in Democrat-run states like New Mexico,” said Shaver. “The New Mexico Health Care Authority denied that Medicaid even pays for abortions but gave two contradicting dollar amounts for PregTerm, which is understood to mean medical or surgical abortions. For a state that is so proud to champion abortion, why are they so unwilling to release actual abortion numbers that state taxpayers have funded?”

In a further twist, the HCA stated in email correspondence that it didn’t know of any government agency that could provide the requested data and suggested contacting private entities like Planned Parenthood instead. This raised additional concerns about accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.

Historically, previous administrations in New Mexico had fulfilled similar records requests in full, making the current administration’s evasiveness all the more concerning. Abortion Free New Mexico has since reached out to an open government organization for assistance and filed another IPRA request, this time targeting the medical codes used for abortion billing.

New Mexico is one of only 19 states that funds elective abortions through Medicaid using state-only funds, a policy rooted in a 1999 New Mexico Supreme Court ruling. The Court held that the state must fund all medically necessary abortions, citing the Equal Rights Amendment in the New Mexico Constitution.

As Shaver put it, “There is a definite trend in New Mexico to promote abortion but keep citizens in the dark about their shameful deeds.” She pointed to legislation passed in 2024, including SB 57, which now conceals the identities of abortion providers employed by public bodies. “The citizens of New Mexico deserve transparency from their government, and every innocent life should be protected under the law—born and preborn.”

Woman drove 700 miles for an ABQ abortion but chose life instead

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—In a powerful testament to the impact of peaceful, faith-based outreach, a woman who traveled more than 700 miles from Houston, Texas, to obtain an abortion at the Southwestern Women’s Options (SWO) clinic in Albuquerque changed her mind and chose life after encountering pro-life advocates on the sidewalk.

According to a statement from the Cherub Initiative, a local pro-life organization, the woman, identified as “Mama M,” arrived at SWO with her aunt after renting a car to make the long journey from Texas. The woman, who was six weeks pregnant, had initially intended to terminate her pregnancy at the facility, one of the few clinics in the nation that performs the latest-term abortions.

“Praise the Lord! Mama M chose life for both herself and her unborn baby because of both teams—the LIFE Runners Albuquerque Chapter and the Cherub Initiative Sidewalk Guardians For Life team!” the organization announced in an email celebrating the news.

Members of the pro-life groups gathered outside SWO for their monthly huddle and prayer outreach. “We began by putting on the full armor of God, being in prayer, public witness, peaceful, law-abiding presence, and doing outreach,” the email explained. When Mama M and her aunt arrived, the teams immediately began reaching out with words of encouragement and offered a “Mommy Hope Bag” filled with gifts and resources to support women choosing life.

According to the Cherub Initiative, Mama M initially went inside the abortion facility but soon returned to the sidewalk in tears, telling the group she had decided to keep her baby. “I don’t know what I was thinking about coming over here to New Mexico to get an abortion done,” she reportedly told the pro-life advocates. “I rented a car and everything, but I am so happy that you all are here because I changed my mind. I am keeping my baby.”

LIFE Runners and Cherub Initiative team members, including their mentor “Papa Phil” and Chief Operating Officer Christina Garza, prayed with Mama M and offered words of hope. “She also noticed that our COO is also pregnant—seeing another mom who is also pregnant on the sidewalks with the teams and giving her encouragement for motherhood and life was a great help to Mama M too,” the organization shared.

With tears in her eyes, Mama M and her aunt waved goodbye to the sidewalk counselors as they departed to return to Houston. “We love you all, we are praying for you all, be safe going home!” the team shouted as the car left the clinic’s parking lot.

New Mexico has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the country, allowing abortion up until the moment of birth with no state restrictions. Pro-life groups like the Cherub Initiative and LIFE Runners have maintained a prayerful, peaceful presence outside clinics like SWO, offering support to women and alternatives to abortion.

The Cherub Initiative reports that more than 300 women have chosen life on the sidewalks outside New Mexico abortion facilities since the ministry’s inception. To date, the group has distributed over 5,500 “Mommy Hope Bags,” which include gifts for mothers, resources for support, and prayers for both mother and child.

The organization is inviting the public to join their next outreach on Friday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon outside Southwestern Women’s Options, where volunteers will hand out roses and Mommy Hope Bags in honor of Mother’s Day.

“Everything we do, we do with, through, and for God as a team,” the Cherub Initiative said. “With the Lord, all things are possible. With Him, we are pro-life unstoppable.”

Despite MLG’s pro-abortion campaign, NM sees decrease in abortions

While abortion rates across the United States continue to rise, New Mexico has seen a noteworthy decline — a trend that many pro-life advocates view as a hopeful sign of cultural and spiritual change. A recent report by the Guttmacher Institute, an organization that supports abortion up-to-birth, confirms that the number of abortions in New Mexico fell by 11% in 2024, dropping from nearly 21,000 to approximately 18,600. This decline breaks from the national trajectory, where the overall number of abortions grew by about 1% last year, reaching an estimated 1.04 million.

This decrease in abortions in New Mexico is especially significant considering the state’s surge in procedures following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade. In the months after the ruling, New Mexico’s abortion rate skyrocketed by more than 78%, making it one of the top destinations for women from nearby states like Texas, where strong pro-life protections were enacted. In fact, in 2023, Texans accounted for 68% of all abortions in New Mexico, representing nearly 14,000 of the procedures performed.

However, despite aggressive promotion from pro-abortion politicians and the use of taxpayer dollars to lure abortionists to relocate to New Mexico, the tide appears to be shifting. In 2024, the number of out-of-state patients declined slightly as well, from 70% of all abortions in 2023 to 69% last year. While the percentage change may seem small, the total number of abortions dropped by more than 2,000 overall.

This downward trend signals that fewer women are making the tragic choice of abortion, even in a state where abortion remains legal up to the date of birth. That change may be due in part to increased education, public awareness campaigns, and spiritual outreach. Organizations like Abortion Free New Mexico have actively sought to reach women through billboard campaigns along major highways from Texas, offering messages of love and encouragement to mothers in crisis. One reads simply, “Mommy. Be brave and turn around. I love you.”

Tara Shaver, spokesperson for the group, emphasized the importance of standing up for the unborn: “We believe that women in Texas are protected by their state’s laws, and they should not be able to circumvent those laws by coming to New Mexico.” Despite opposition from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who has funneled millions in public money to build abortion facilities and recruit out-of-state abortionists, many New Mexicans continue to stand up for life. According to polling, most New Mexicans are pro-life.

The governor’s “Free to Provide” campaign, which used $400,000 in taxpayer funds to draw abortion providers from other states, along with her push for $10 million to build a new clinic in Northern New Mexico, underscores how invested the state’s leadership is in promoting abortion. But the declining numbers suggest that New Mexico’s residents — and perhaps even those coming from out of state — are beginning to make different choices.

NM high court won’t create constitutional right to abortion in latest ruling

Despite some individuals attacking legal efforts for sanctuary cities for the unborn measures in New Mexico counties and municipalities by claiming they would create a constitutional right to abortion, the state Supreme Court today made very clear it would not make that determination in a lawsuit on the matter.

The ordinances were crafted using the federal Comstock Act, which prohibits the mailing of abortion-related materials, which would include the unsafe medication abortion pills.

Although the Court struck down these ordinances, it did write, “It is an enduring principle of constitutional jurisprudence that courts will avoid deciding constitutional questions unless required to do so,” adding, “Our forbearance of the constitutional questions, however, should not be construed as commentary on their merit. Rather, we heed the canon of constitutional avoidance and refrain from deciding constitutional issues unnecessary to the disposition of this case.”

During the case, Attorney General Raúl Torrez’s office argued that the ordinances violated the New Mexico Constitution’s Equal Rights Amendment, but the New Mexico Supreme Court declined that argument, writing, “We therefore decline to reach the State’s additional arguments under the New Mexico Constitution.”

The Court concluded, “We hold the Ordinances are preempted in their entirety based on the independent and adequate state law grounds provided in the Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Health Care Freedom Act, the Medical Practice Act, the Medical Malpractice Act, and the Health Care Code, as well as the Uniform Licensing Act.”

Now, the New Mexico Supreme Court, by ruling on the matter, has paved the way for the case to be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court. If the highest court in the land disagrees with the New Mexico Supreme Court that the Health Care Freedom Act explicitly preempts local regulations that interfere with access to reproductive health care, it could mean enforcement of a prohibition on trafficking abortion medications through the mail.

Attorney Jonathan Mitchell, who spearheaded these ordinances and worked on the litigation, wrote following the ruling, “We are thrilled with the New Mexico Supreme Court’s ruling.”

He added, “This is the first court to hold that an ordinance requiring compliance with the federal Comstock Act prohibits the shipment and receipt of abortion-related paraphernalia in states where abortion remains legal. We look forward to litigating these issues in other states and bringing the meaning of the federal Comstock Act to the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Lujan Grisham, NM Dems stump for Harris by touting abortion up-to-birth

To campaign for Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris, New Mexico Democrats joined at a so-called “Reproductive Health” bus tour to tout how Harris would push radical abortion up-to-birth policies nationwide, like those in New Mexico, where killing a child in the womb is legal up to the date of its birth.

The event was joined by far-left Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico’s far-left congressional delegation members, members of the New Mexico Legislature, including Speaker Javier Martinez, among others.

The Democrat Party of New Mexico (DPNM) on social media wrote, “NM Democrats at every level have proven to be reliable allies for abortion rights,” saying Harris is as radical pro-abortion as they are.

They also continued to peddle lies that the so-called “Project 2025” is affiliated with 45th President Donald Trump although even the group’s founders have debunked this fake claim.

Trump & Republicans are responsible for taking away fundamental reproductive rights & lifesaving care from millions, & NM Republicans  would follow Trump’s Project 2025 agenda that would further eliminate our bodily autonomy & freedoms,” erroneously claimed DPNM.

Lujan Grisham showed up at the bus tour in a Pepto Bismol-colored pant suit, a shirt that read “Hotties for Harris,” and Converse sneakers, writing on social media, “I’ve got my pink chucks on for the Fight for Reproductive Freedoms bus tour. We’re fired up to elect [Kamala Harris] and defend our rights. Now here’s what I need you to do. From now till November, roll those sleeves up, get to work, and let’s win in November.”

A similar message was posted by Rep. Melanie Stansbury, claiming “rights” will be taken away if Republicans take charge.

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez posted that if babies aren’t to be killed up to the day of their birth, it would be “going back.”

Despite the states having control over abortion laws, Democrats continue to push the abortion message, in the attempt to win the election. Trump is currently leading in all but a couple of the most hotly contested battleground states, according to recent polls. Early voting began on Tuesday in New Mexico.

Gov. Lujan Grisham cares more about abortion than abused children

The safety and well-being of our children are more important to me than being “politically correct” or whatever negative feedback my words here will bring about.

Unfortunately, the opposite is the case for Governor Lujan Grisham. Her administration is more interested in placating their political party than advocating for and protecting the neglected and abused children in our state. Regardless of your personal views on this sensitive subject, no one can deny that New Mexico is the worst state to be in for disadvantaged children. We have the worst child well-being rating in the nation in large part due to the administrative failures of the Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD).

Earlier this month, the Governor celebrated the new construction of a $10 million abortion clinic in Las Cruces primarily targeted at Texas mothers. That same week, the Albuquerque Journal reported the shocking cost of  CYFD’s wrongful death lawsuit settlement payouts. Your tax dollars have paid out $21 million to families of children harmed or killed under the department’s watch in the last three years. This has been an exponential increase over recent years, and yet, no solutions have been supported to allow for true departmental reform.

Consider the sum of those amounts—that is, $31 million of your tax dollars being spent to advance the political agenda of our Governor while also obscuring her failures while in office. The people of our state, and particularly our at-risk kids, cannot afford to spend another dime protecting the legacy of this administration for her to get a promotion at the end of her term. Let me be clear: this is a leadership failure. The hardworking employees at CYFD have tough and oftentimes thankless jobs; it is not their fault the department they work for has a 34% vacancy rate, it’s not their fault children in the system are still sleeping in office buildings, and it’s also not their fault that employees are overworked and underpaid. These sad realities are the result of mismanagement and a lack of care from the Governor and her executive staff.

Regardless of your political affiliation or personal beliefs, each and every New Mexican, especially New Mexican parents, should be ashamed of our leadership, our failed track record, and our continual downward path as a state when it comes to protecting our vulnerable and neglected children.

New Mexican’s “reproductive health” rights are some of the most protected, unrestricted, and available in the nation. Should our focus really be in this direction? The environment we provide for our children is the worst in the nation. Yet, in the decade I have been in the Roundhouse, all we have seen are empty promises of reform. Our case workers are doing all they can, but without support from the administration, they will continue to run up against a brick wall and burn out quickly.

We must get serious about reform. New Mexico is again ranked the worst in the country according to the thorough “Kids Count” research project provided by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. We are failing our children and at the same time prioritizing all the wrong things; with neglected and vulnerable children being the ones who pay the price.

Enough is enough, we must hold our elected officials accountable. The statistics and balance sheets don’t lie, the Governor and Democratic majorities in the State Legislature have (much like our public school students) failed. Keep this in mind this November. I hope, for the sake of our children, our state heads in a different direction.

State Sen. David Gallegos represents New Mexico Senate District 51 in the Legislature, previously serving in the New Mexico House of Representatives. He is also a school board member for Eunice Public Schools.

MLG compares getting abortions to slavery-era practice in Virginia speech

While campaigning for the Harris-Walz ticket in Virginia, far-left New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham drew attention to her state’s unique role in providing abortion services since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

During her speech at the Northern Virginia Democratic headquarters, Lujan Grisham emphasized how New Mexico has effectively become a “de facto Underground Railroad” for women seeking abortions, with 75% of these procedures being performed on out-of-state patients.

“We literally now have an underground operation, not unlike something we’re all familiar with, the Underground Railroad, to try to make sure that we get to women and their families early,” Lujan Grisham stated, highlighting the growing demand for abortion services from neighboring states, especially Texas. She described the difficult situations many women face, adding, “Sometimes if we save their lives, we’ve also ruined any opportunity for them to have a child of their own when they’re ready.”

New Mexico has become a tourist destination for women seeking abortions. Lujan Grisham’s remarks underscored how her state has positioned itself as a “bastion for safe, fair reproductive access around the country,” or as many would call it, a back alley abortion facility for other states.

Lujan Grisham’s efforts to bolster the state’s capacity to serve out-of-state patients include placing billboards in Texas encouraging pro-abortion healthcare providers from the state to consider practicing in New Mexico.

“If you’re a healthcare practitioner, why would you practice here if you’re sworn to protect the lives of your patients? If you want no interference, come to New Mexico,” Lujan Grisham said, referring to the growing restrictions on abortion in Texas, where 71% of New Mexico’s out-of-state patients come from, per the New York Post

Lujan Grisham breaking ground on $10M taxpayer-funded abortion center

Far-left Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will be traveling to Las Cruces to mark the groundbreaking of a new taxpayer-funded abortion center, made possible by $10 million in taxpayer money rushed through the Legislature in 2023.

The facility, located in Doña Ana County, is a key part of her administration’s response to the rising demand for abortion services following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Since that ruling, states like Texas have enacted strict bans on abortion, pushing many out-of-state residents to seek services in New Mexico, where the procedure remains legal.

The $10 million allocated for the clinic was included in the 2023 capital outlay bill, which became a source of contention during the legislative session.

The funding was rammed through the process, forcing bipartisan legislators to vote against the broader bill due to the inclusion of this particular expenditure.

Many see the move as unnecessarily divisive, pointing to the fact that New Mexico already had several abortion facilities serving the area, and the abortion mill will merely be Texas’ back-alley abortion facility.

While Governor Lujan Grisham has positioned the new clinic as part of her broader commitment to “protecting women’s health,” which doesn’t actually do anything but end children’s lives, many New Mexicans see it as a misallocation of taxpayer dollars that will exacerbate tensions over abortion access in the region, while Texas has life-affirming laws in place.

Amid Heinrich’s lies, Domenici puts him on notice

In a bold move against dishonest campaign tactics, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Nella Domenici has issued a cease and desist letter via her attorneys to her Democrat opponent, Sen. Martin Heinrich, accusing his campaign of disseminating false and defamatory information. The letter, sent on Friday, takes aim at a television advertisement produced by Heinrich’s campaign, which falsely asserts that Domenici supports a national abortion ban—an accusation Domenici vehemently denies.

The letter, addressed to Heinrich’s campaign manager, Brad Elkins, outlines the clear and consistent position Domenici has taken on the issue of abortion. According to the cease and desist letter, Domenici’s stance is widely publicized that she does not support a national abortion ban. This stance, prominently featured on her campaign website, is backed by her appearances in television commercials, public speeches, radio interviews, and articles in reputable news outlets.

Domenici’s legal team, led by attorney Anna Mackin, argues that Heinrich’s advertisement is not only false but also deliberately misleading, intended to deceive New Mexico voters as the November 2024 election approaches. “By disseminating false statements about Ms. Domenici’s position, Heinrich is misleading New Mexico voters and is contributing to the public’s skepticism about truth in the media,” Mackin wrote. The letter highlights that even Heinrich’s own campaign materials acknowledge Domenici’s opposition to a federal abortion ban, making the ad’s claims particularly egregious.

The letter also calls for Heinrich to cease airing the ad and any other misleading materials immediately and to issue a public apology to Domenici for what her campaign describes as an “intentional, malicious misrepresentation” of her views. Failure to comply, the letter warns, could result in legal action against Heinrich’s campaign for knowingly spreading false and defamatory information.

This is not the first time Heinrich’s campaign has been accused of employing dishonest tactics. Domenici’s letter references a previous incident where Heinrich was caught disseminating false information about her positions, drawing criticism from local media outlets. This latest incident, however, marks a significant escalation, with Domenici’s legal team formally challenging Heinrich’s campaign in a public and legal forum.

The letter underscores the importance of honesty and transparency in political advertising, especially on sensitive issues like abortion. Domenici’s campaign contends that such falsehoods not only damage the integrity of the electoral process but also contribute to voter cynicism and distrust. “New Mexico voters deserve the freedom to make informed decisions on Election Day,” Mackin stated, emphasizing that Heinrich’s shady tactics undermine this fundamental democratic principle.

As the November 2024 election draws nearer, the stakes are high for both candidates. Domenici, who has built her campaign on a platform of integrity and service, views Heinrich’s actions as a direct threat to the democratic process. Her response signals a willingness to fight back against what she perceives as underhanded tactics, setting the stage for a potentially contentious legal battle if Heinrich does not retract the ad.

Recent polls show Heinrich neck-and-neck with Domenici, likely triggering his campaign’s string of untrue, patently false ads against Domenici.

In maniacal DNC speech, MLG auditions to be Harris’ abortion czar

On Tuesday night, far-left pro-abortion Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham gave her best shot at an attempt to headline “healthcare” issues in the potential Kamala Harris regime come 2025 with a Democrat National Convention (DNC) speech.

She had a significant focus on abortion up-to-birth policies and wooing doctors from pro-life states to come to kill babies in the womb in pro-abortion states like New Mexico.

“Donald Trump and J.D. Vance want to dismantle our health care system, repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), and eliminate protections for pre-existing conditions,” the far-left fringe governor declared, despite that not being the case other than the GOP ticket vowing to do away with the socialist, antiquated Obama-era law and stop it from repelling doctors and media professionals from states like New Mexico.

She said, “Either these guys don’t get it, or they just don’t care,” referring to Trump and Vance, despite Trump lowering health care costs for Americans by lowering premiums and drug costs and giving veterans a choice in their health care decisions.

“You know who gets it? Kamala Harris gets it, and she cares,” the radical leftist declared. “Do you know what Donald Trump delivered? Junk plans, higher premiums, and abortion bans,” she claimed, despite Democrats clinging on to the failed Obamacare framework after the former Sen. John McCain joined Democrats in helping stop the repeal of the outdated and flawed law that resulted in premiums skyrocketing and people forced not to be insured due to said high prices.

She touted how Harris claims she will give abortions to “any woman who needs it,” adding that the pro-abortion Democrat “nominee” is the “president America needs.”

Lujan Grisham is known for ramming through a 2021 law that stripped any and all protections for babies, expectant mothers, and healthcare professionals to effectively legalize abortion up-to-birth and create the possibility for the continuance of infanticide in the Land of Enchantment.

The audition to be Harris’ abortion czar was met with applause by the rabidly anti-life audience, which frothed at the mouth at the idea of more kids being killed prematurely.

To prove the DNC’s pro-abortion bona fides, at least 25 babies were killed at a mobile unit set up in a truck by Planned Parenthood for DNC attendees to kill their babies while at the convention.
