New Mexico’s far-left political leadership has transformed the state into a regional destination for abortion and transgender-related medical procedures, with new reporting from the Albuquerque Journal showing a sharp increase in out-of-state patients traveling here for hormone treatments and other so-called “gender-affirming care.”
According to the Journal, Planned Parenthood clinics in New Mexico have seen a 50% increase in patients seeking hormonal transgender treatments over the past six months, with half of those patients coming from outside New Mexico.
The influx comes as neighboring conservative states such as Texas and Utah have enacted restrictions on unproven and scientifically unproven so-called “transgender” medical interventions for minors and tightened abortion laws—while New Mexico Democrats have moved aggressively in the opposite direction, positioning the Land of Enchantment as one of the most permissive states in the nation for both abortion and transgender procedures.
Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains CEO Adrianne Mansanares celebrated the trend, telling the Journal that New Mexico is “one of the most welcoming states” for gender-related medical care.
“I take great pride in that,” Mansanares said. “It’s really wonderful that people see New Mexico as a place where they can come.”
That “welcome mat” did not happen by accident.
In 2023, New Mexico Democrats rammed through legislation shielding providers of transgender-related medical care from out-of-state legal actions and strengthening legal protections for patients seeking such treatments. The same Democratic majority has also enacted sweeping abortion protections, helping make New Mexico a destination for late-term abortion and other controversial procedures.
Republicans argue the state has gone far beyond simply protecting adult choice and has embraced an increasingly radical social agenda.
“Whether it’s abortion or transgender services, the most fundamental failure of Planned Parenthood is that they don’t provide options so much as they push their views on highly impressionable people,” Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela told the Journal.
She also criticized taxpayer support flowing to organizations like Planned Parenthood through Medicaid reimbursements and other state contracts.
The Journal highlighted the story of Grace Dukes, a 19-year-old transgender-identifying patient whose family left Texas after that state banned transgender hormone treatments for minors. Dukes said Texas officials “betrayed” families by restricting such procedures.
But many New Mexicans view those restrictions differently—seeing them as parental-rights and child-protection measures.
New Mexico’s Democratic leadership, by contrast, has aligned itself firmly with activist groups and providers pushing expanded access to both abortion and transgender interventions, even as the issue becomes increasingly divisive nationally.
The result is that New Mexico is no longer merely tolerating these controversial procedures—it is actively becoming a hub for them.
As the Journal’s reporting makes clear, out-of-state demand is rising rapidly.
That may be welcome news for Planned Parenthood and progressive activists, but for many residents it raises a larger question: why are New Mexico’s leaders working so hard to turn the state into the Southwest’s destination for abortion and gender-transition medicine while the state continues to rank near the bottom nationally in education, child well-being, and violent crime?
Instead of fixing New Mexico’s chronic failures, Democratic leaders appear intent on building a national reputation for exporting progressive social policy.
And increasingly, people are coming here for exactly that.

“Planned Parenthood takes great pride in NM’s trans patient surge”. This is why New Mexico has so many issues going on right now. And why New Mexico has become a not so good place to be in overall. I mean, NM already has enough problems on it’s plate. The fact that schools in the state, especially public schools, are teaching little children that changing their gender will somehow make their lives better in the long-run, when in reality, transgender people, including children who have had the gender reassignment surgery to become a different gender, have one of the highest suicide or attempted suicide rates of any group of people across the globe. And thinking that somehow a little child, like let’s say a little boy, was “born in the wrong gender” or was “born in the wrong body” is an insult to biology and scientifically impossible. And thinking that little boy, especially if it’s like your little five year old son, can “decide” for himself to get gender reassignment surgery to become a different gender. That is what is considered as……..child abuse. A child that age doesn’t have the brain power to decide for himself whether or not he wants to change his gender. Children at that age’s brains aren’t fully developed yet in order to decide something like that. It doesn’t mean that they are dumb or stupid. But, it’s the truth. If you are a parent who thinks that your five year old child, or even your eighteen month old can somehow “decide” for themselves, make the decision on their own, to have a surgical procedure to change into a different gender, then something is wrong with you as that parent. You, as that parent who thinks that, you are essentially brainwashing your little five year old child into believing that. And that is what certain teachers in public schools, especially the more leftist or pro-woke ideology teachers, are doing to little children too. They are brainwashing them into believing that they can change to a different gender at that age and they are brainwashing them into believing that they can “decide” for themselves, at five years old, or even eighteen months old, whether they can change their gender. They can’t do that. This is one of the issues facing NM right now. There are of course other issues facing the state. Including the continued skyrocketing crime across the state and other pressing matters. Plus, the fact that NM is right now one of the states, and countries possibly, that is being hit by arguably one of the worst droughts in the history of the United States. In fact, numerous sources, including Endtimes Headlines, and other sources, are saying that more than 60% of the contiguous United States is in a drought of some form, including severe drought, and they are also saying that numerous states are running out of water, or are in a water crisis. And NM is one of these places that are being hit right now. I mean, it’s not like it’s a new thing for places like NM. NM is in the desert. We’ve always had droughts and we always will. But, this is like one of the worst droughts to strike the United States, including New Mexico. And other countries are being hit too. In fact, according to numerous sources, including I believe Newsmax even, January through March of this year, 2026, is the driest first three months of a year, of any year, on record for the United States alone. Of course, some are blaming “climate change” for this. Some are calling this part of the so-called “climate crisis”. I don’t believe that necessarily, but certainly this current drought is historic. I mean, more than 60% of the contingous U.S….. in a drought?! That is historic. Not “unprecedented” necessarily. But historic.

(1) There will be no Feral Gooberment financial backing for any of this. So, who funds all this communist B.S.?
Answer — It must ALL be funded by New Mexico taxpayers! And, ultimately, people get tired of sending checks to Sant Fe and the “move on” to better jobs and more spendable income.
(2) For taxpayer’s to fund this falderal, there must be a “primary job” base, to sustain the “secondary job” base. So, put your Wall Street “financial investment hat” and “venture capital hat” on for a moment… would you give $0.10 cents for capital improvements or business expansion to anyone in N.M.? …I certainly would not.
(3) Big companies have walked away from N.M. in recent years because there is no viable workforce! Competitive central banks like J.P. Morgan-Chase, or HSBC, won’t even open “banking” branches in New Mexico, because the majority workforce are on the Round House Gooberment teat.
So, ask yourself, would bond insurers like Moody’s, Fitch, S&P, insure any large muni-bond offering for any project in N.M.? …I’ve dealt with them.
And I suspect the answer is “NO.”
(4) Now that D.E.I. and the woke military has been dealt with, why would the War Department keep a presence in Albuquerque? What purpose could it possibly serve for “national security” when you’ve got Cannon and White Sands dominating the military force in N.M.?
The grass is greener in Texas and Arizona. Why have ANY military job base in N.M. at all?

So sad that the true suicide stats regarding trans gender “care” simply isn’t reported – the suicides which happen mostly AFTER an irreversible trans surgery. Parents who have chosen to give their premature child trans medical “treatments” have forgotten the science of a maturing body. A body that continues to change with time, regardless of the chemicals fed into it. Males usually do not fully mature until early 20’s, females a bit younger. No decision should be made until FULL maturity is reached, and a fully mature person is the one who makes the decision, not a child trying to find their way in this world being fed false information.
