NM is dead last in child well-being—But MLG claims we’re leading

In a desperate attempt to paper over New Mexico’s dead-last ranking in child well-being, far-left Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham took to social media this weekend to share a gaslighting op-ed from two of her newfound allies—State Sen. Bill Sharer and child care center operator Barbara Luna Tedrow—claiming that New Mexico is “not last” in child welfare. The claim flies in the face of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s most recent Kids Count report, which once again places the Land of Enchantment dead last for child well-being.

“Studies and rankings may not reflect this progress immediately because transformative change takes time,” Lujan Grisham posted on X. “But make no mistake, New Mexico is making progress on behalf of its children.” The post reads like classic political spin from an administration under fire.

What the governor conveniently ignores is that the Kids Count report is not some fly-by-night survey. It is a respected, comprehensive review of state-by-state indicators like child poverty, education, health, and family stability—areas where New Mexico has repeatedly failed. But rather than confront the data, the Lujan Grisham regime has chosen to manufacture its own version of “success,” propped up by loyalists and political allies.

One of those allies is State Sen. Bill Sharer, who previously attempted to hike alcohol taxes—a move that disproportionately hurts working families—and stood in vehement opposition to calls for Lujan Grisham’s impeachment after she unconstitutionally suspended Second Amendment rights in 2023. Now, Sharer is moonlighting as a spin doctor, teaming up with Tedrow, the owner of A Gold Star Academy & Child Development Center, to claim New Mexico is a “national success story.”

Their op-ed praises taxpayer-funded socialist “free” daycare expansions at Gold Star’s Farmington locations and state subsidies that allow for employee benefits. But what it fails to mention is that these programs—however well-intentioned—have done nothing to reverse the state’s abysmal child outcomes on a macro level. No amount of anecdotal feel-good stories from one provider will change the fact that New Mexico still leads the nation in childhood poverty and lags far behind in educational attainment.

What’s more, the op-ed reeks of self-interest. Tedrow’s child care center has benefited handsomely from government dollars, with expansion to five facilities and lavish wage and benefit increases. Of course she’s going to claim New Mexico is “leading”—her business depends on it.

Meanwhile, families across the state continue to suffer the consequences of failed leadership. Crime is rampant. Educational outcomes remain among the worst in the nation. And child poverty is still shockingly high. Yet Lujan Grisham and her allies want the public to ignore all of that because a handful of daycare centers added a few hundred spots.

It’s a shameful attempt to gaslight the public into accepting mediocrity—or worse, celebrating it. New Mexicans don’t need propaganda. They need accountability, real reform, and a governor who takes responsibility for the state’s failures instead of spinning them as victories.

No amount of glossy op-eds will change the truth: under Lujan Grisham’s leadership, New Mexico is not leading—it’s losing.

    1. exactly Gil!!! She thinks she is still talking DOWN to the uninformed New Mexicans! NM has come a long way from being bought DEMS!!!

  1. fill in the blank. NM is last in _______. just about everything. the democrat voters in this state hold the rest of us hostage voting for losers every single time and never even understanding the issues they are voting for. the loser judges that let criminals out were all voted right back in. the democrat voters make this state miserable. for years my family and friends that dont live in NM ask me why I live here. I like the weather, the scenery. but the political climate here is stupidville. and there is more stupid coming our way. there always is. Tim Keller 3rd term, Deb Haaland Governor. how much worse can you do NM ? not much. look at our US senators congresspeople, all clueless. just spend money and buy votes . its never going to change here.

    1. Yeah, the demonrats are greedy bastards who only care about two things – staying in office and getting even richer than they already are. To Hell with the state or nation. I wish more than anything we had term limits for all politicians and judges.

  2. Marcello T. Hinojosa

She is a liar and scoundrel. Our state is last in all the good things and first in all the bad things. Democrats need to wake up!

  3. this is the same governor that last week stated that although NM has some of the worst roads in the nation, they should be the best. huh ? what sense has this imbecile ever made ? remember when she limited capacity in all stores to include our shopping malls to 75 people during covid ? a store like costco with a fire marshall capacity of 1000 people limited to 75 people. i remember seeing old people standing in line in the cold during winter becaue of her rules. and then the state re-elected this idiot ! NM you are last in intelligence too apparently.

    1. Helped along by the news people that parrot the democrat party line. Way too many New Mexicans get their living from the government. If every worker could move the scandal would end.

  4. This is the narrative of Democrats lately to deny reality. We were told that we did not see violence in LA. We were told Joe Biden is sharp as a tack. There is no problem with child well being. Im sure the white washing g works with the low info voter and the voter with blinds on.

  5. MLG has been so focused on illegals and keeping criminals in NM and money in her pocket, she refuses to do anything to help NM citizens. She has run NM like her own little fiefdom and she is the queen on her toilet throne. I think DOGE should investigate Tedrow and find out where all the money in going because it sure isn’t going to help our children. They are poor excuses for humans and a waste of skin. Liars and crooked politicians. Satan inspired.

  6. MLG…is a pain in the behind for me…I wish Scotty would just beam her up …like in Star Trek… I don’t know if her lieutenant governor would be in better…but when she does leave I will make a plaque for her that reads “ MLG who came in last in all categories for the Land of Enchantment..” with her picture and hang it in the Capitol building in Santa Fe.

  7. MLG IS A WANNA BE HITLER AND ALL DEMOCRATS HATE GOD AND JESUS I PRAY EVERY NITE THAT GOD RAINS HELL ON SANTA FE CAPITOL AND THE GOVENOR WIPE THEM OUT ALL DEMOCRATS

    1. All Capitols, including Santa Fe are built on power centers where ley lines cross. When you go to Santa Fe capital and pray for the evil to be dismantled your prayer is amplified. When you fast and pray it is even more powerful. This is what evil uses against us, it’s time to use it against them.

  8. MLG IS A WANNA BE HITLER AND ALL DEMOCRATS HATE GOD AND JESUS I PRAY EVERY NITE THAT GOD RAINS HELL ON SANTA FE CAPITOL AND THE GOVENOR WIPE THEM OUT ALL DEMOCRATS

  9. Known as the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico is being called out as The Land of Child Endangerment.
New Mexico Governor Lujan-Grisham is putting a spin on children’s safety. There are alot of things that go unrecorded or investigated and the children suffer.
My sister Deena and I were caught up in the NM welfare system for 5 years!
To this day we cannot get records from
New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department: (NMCYFD). Outside parties
assisting us are unable as of yet to find anything.

  10. The next time State Sen. Bill Sharer is up for election, he needs to be “primaried”! I’ve seen enough!

  11. I love the irony of responding to a shit opinion piece with an equally shit editorial. Keep it up! We hate everything and we have no ideas!

      Ok… so here you go..
      1. Open up Gambling State wide, include card tables to all non profits and State run Racinos, give Tribes Horse Racing or dog racing.. about $325,000,000 in taxes per year from tribal and State Racinos generated to the general fund right now as it is…opening it up, instead of continuing the “Limited Gaming” Democrat or Dead mantra is killing gambling in the State. I wouldn’t be surprised if opened up, Gambling exceeds Oil and Gas tax revenues.
      2. Expand Child health care centers complete with rooms and lodging… not prisons… but for children in need of services. 20 facilities across the State, 20-100 rooms each. Draw from the Permanent tax fund…which is about $2,000,000,000.00… yes that is Trillion… not Billion… Spend 200 million on these places. Continuance to fund operating expenses at 20 million per year.
      3. Expand Veterans health and homelessness care, use Permanent Tax funds, build 5- 100-150 room facilities across the State., Spend another 150 million on them. Keep them operating at another 15-18 million per year.
      4. Expand oil and gas, AND WIND AND SOLAR… revenues go toward offset Child health and Veterans Centers.
      5. Gift BLM and State lands to Tribes that are tied up with BLM and Forestry… to build better resort casinos, and enhance ranching on public AND tribal lands… get rid of the fences, let ranchers graze freely which lowers operating costs. Enhance and enforce branding laws of cattle. Grazing in the forest reduce wildfires… common sense.
      6. Permit lumber mills to operate in burn areas. Cut it, replant it, use the lumber to lower costs of building homes across the State… NOT INTERSTATE… use the lumber IN OUR STATE. permit ranchers to free graze in burn areas after replanting trees are out of grazing ways… ie. 3-5 years depending on the initial height of the tree planted.
      7. Expand mining of dolomite, a needed source for concrete… lower cost of it, lower cost of building.
      8. Pave more roadways to lower dust… #1 issue in NM is breathing issues, paving more roads reduces dust. Chip seal is the cheapest way. pay from the permanent fund to do this.
      9. Build two more prisons. More people equates to more crime. Make bed space available to house criminals instead of letting them out on bond. 20 million each. 300-600 beds. Permanent fund draw down.
      10. Expand farming lands offer BLM and State lands tied up, to farmers or potential farmers… 160 acres at a time per family unit. Grow more cotton, more green chile, more alfalfa. Offer incentives for equipment and water. They succeed, they pay taxes.
I’ve spent half of the Permanent funds. It will still be replenished by expanded Oil, gas, gambling, lumber, and ranching and farming.
I’ve set aside places where our children can get help and an education in a safe area. I’ve expanded better services to Veterans…
Betcha 20 bucks the DNC led politicians cannot approve one fu*king thing I’ve said that should and can be done.

  12. I agree with all but the last statement, not sure what that is pushing. We need to remind the mostly hispanics that they are not democrats even though they vote democrat. Most NMs are conservatives, they do not believe in killing babies, they believe in less government, school choice, the parents running the family not the government. We just need to convince our democrat friends that they are in deed conservatives (not necessarily republicans) But closer to the party of the KKK and slavery.

    1. The party of slavery and the KKK are the Democrats. They are the party of Jim Crow. The Republicans were the abolitionists. Not sure what your last sentence was trying to convey Mike???

  13. Of course there won’t be any “No Queens” protest. The Midget Tyrant is so far up Newsome’s you know what
