As Dems prep alcohol tax hike, MLG wants you to join ‘Dry January’

Far-left Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is urging New Mexicans via the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) to join the “Dry January” challenge, which means no consumption of alcohol whatsoever during the first month of the year.

“Start the new year with a healthy reset by joining the growing movement of Dry January, a month-long commitment to go alcohol-free and focus on wellness,” wrote the Department in a press release. “Dry January is a global public health initiative encouraging people to take a break from alcohol for the entire month of January.”

In response, state Rep. John Block (R-Alamogordo) wrote on X, “Governor drunk on power (@GovMLG) wants you to join ‘dry January,’” adding, “Sure, guv! I’ll take a glass of a nice dry Cabernet this evening — not paid for by the taxpayers — unlike your extravagant alcohol binge during COVID.”

Notably, this comes from the same governor who spent lavishly on beer, wine, and spirits on the taxpayers’ dime during her stringent COVID-19 lockdowns and beyond.

For example, KOB reported, on one occasion,  “The receipts we reviewed show about $350 in alcohol purchase for beer, Crown Royal, an assortment of wines and tequila.  According to Stelnicki, these alcohol purchases were made over a period of time for a future staff party after the COVID-19 pandemic ends.”

Democrat allies of the governor in the legislature previously introduced and are reintroducing legislation that will increase alcohol taxes on consumers, harming the poorest New Mexicans.

Proponents of the tax are attempting to attack white people for consumption of alcohol, saying they are the reason there are “alcohol harms” in the state.

“Most alcohol in the state is consumed by individuals who are White, yet the highest mortality is observed among individuals who are Indigenous, Hispanic, and Black individuals,” a November presentation from a group presenting the bill in front of the interim Indian Affairs Committee noted, adding, “Most alcohol in the state is consumed by individuals who are White, yet the highest mortality is observed among individuals who are Indigenous, Hispanic, and Black individuals.”

The presentation, which now floats a 12 percent alcohol sales tax and an increased excise tax, notes how consumers would be forced to pay $2.50 more for a bottle of vodka, $15.00 more for a bottle of Scotch whiskey, with unfounded claims that increases would “[r]educe alcohol consumption by approximately 4%-11%”

Now, as the legislation moves through the Legislature during the upcoming January 21 legislative session, New Mexicans should be informed about how this would negatively affect them if it is passed.

  1. Apparently there are no limits in their attacks on small businesses like bars, restaurants, distributors, and retail. This will add to the burden of minimum wage laws and other taxes. If you can’t get prohibition laws then just tax the industry to death.

  2. How about taking a Lifelong Break from all the Cannabis the Governor has encouraged in all our communities. 5-10 of them per block…Hideous and shameful.

  3. I’d rather see current tax dollars be spent on educating people on how crappy alcohol is. I’ve seen it, and lived it, drinking is a bad life choice — so are all the other drugs (I’m looking at you marijuana).
I’m not for increased taxes, or necessarily for prohibition laws — I’m for holding media industries (“hollywood”, music, social media, etc) accountable for promoting cultures of alcohol, drugs, sex, violence, gang glorification, etc. — humans learn by watching other humans, this is critical to understand. Children absorb the garbage that’s on every form of media shoved into their face by groups that just want to pull them in by any means necessary in order to advertise to them; if that means showing them extreme behavior, they don’t care.
Of course, that won’t generate revenue like a tax on alcohol…
Side note… I wonder if the “marijuana lobbyists” have anything to do with an increased tax on alcohol??? There seems to be a consistent pressure to get more people smoking weed… the drug seems to dumb people down and make them more malleable.

  4. We have to drink to be able to tolerate the Demos.
If you don’t drink, in the morning, when you wake up, is the best you are going to feel all day.

  5. Government Plantation or Free Nation. MLG has shown us where she stands, now it is time for you and your family to decide if you want to be a slave or a free human being. We are constantly under pressure to cave in and become a slave, as previous examples show, it starts small and escalates until they lay claim to all of your work product. My advice is to vote every Democrat out of office until the Republicans start the same stuff, then vote them out of offices. We have the power right now but there will come a day when your vote will not matter, then it is too late.

  6. I think I’ll have a glass of wine to celebrate “Dry January”. Another dumb idea promoted by the left. I can see the slippery slope of added taxes that contributes to black-market purchases that avoid taxes altogether. There isn’t a tax politicians don’t like as those they add to Tobacco, Marijuana and now alcohol as well as just about everything is now taxed. Maybe someday voters will wise up to politicians taking our hard earned money and make them show how and where every Penney is spent. Gas taxes sure don’t seem to be making it to our roads especially to our city streets, so tell us, where our tax dollars are being spent before taking more.

  7. Well, I guess I will have to buy out of state while giving her & the rest of the Dip Sh*ts the middle finger. Oh, that means in person, so they can’t collect.

All the while Blessing her office with my voice. As I think ALL of us should along with the lovely email blast to each & everyone starting now.

  8. Two things,

It’s a great opportunity to bring back bootlegging, especially if you live near TX , AZ. or CO.

Research has shown that some alcohol per day, in the right low quantities, improves health and increases longevity. Where does that fit with all the ridiculous bills they have passed under the category of health, like changing your gender for fun (whimsey) and somebody’s profit?

None of the ‘feel good’ left’s things are done for any reason but to gain power while destroying America. But it is important that they feel good while doing it.

  9. J, you hit the nail on the head “There seems to be a consistent pressure to get more people smoking weed… the drug seems to dumb people down and make them more malleable.” This is the agenda George Soros has been pushing for 30 years now. As someone who worked in the Substance Abuse Prevention field for 25 years, I saw all of what you are describing. Alcohol sales tax is supposed to be going for Prevention and Treatment programs and guess how much is actually going to those programs…last I was aware, it was about 40%. The rest goes to the “General Fund” and funds who know what! Before raising the taxes on alcohol, put the money what it is statutorily earmarked for. What will the new taxes be spent on if it passes? I could go on…and on…

  10. She tried being our Mom during Covid when she tried (laughingly) at is for doing a little traveling. Now shexwants to be our mom by telling us what to consume. Not the Governors job and she’s sucks a governor and a mom.

  11. Typical from the left, tax to death, do what I say, not what I do, and the dems would not obey, especially once the session starts, I’ve seen those legilators out and about drunk off their asses.

  12. Raising taxes is just raising taxes.. It won’t slow drinking down nor benefit the small business owner, it will just raise taxes! Once again Loserjan is showing her stupidity and greed!

  13. You can't be Catholic and vote Dem

Where was the feckless NM Dept of health when marijuana was legalized?
It is doubtful matronly MLG will stop the booze during Jan 2025 – after all it’s free (to her) thanks to your tax dollars. In addition, she will need. a drink when Trump takes the oath of office and Bobby Kennedy is confirmed.
    Cheers Governor!

  14. Notice how she tried to emphasize that’s it should be considered a ‘white people’ tax. Whose mentality is she insulting now? Her only solution to her problems is to tax more so she can spend more.

    1. “Most alcohol in the state is consumed by individuals who are White, yet the highest mortality is observed among individuals who are Indigenous, Hispanic, and Black individuals …”
The first part of this sentence is absolutely BS! No doubt the most abusive consumers of alcohol are minorities which is unfortunate but probably correct.
I seriously doubt if Dems will raise taxes on alcohol because most of their biggest donors are liquor-related lobbyists.
      Where’s my toddy? 🙂

  15. Most taxes are simply government theft! They do nothing to deserve more of our hard earned money! Politicians simply convert more money to “slush” funds that they use at their discretion to grow more government. I agree with the previous comments that our ruling “elites “ want everyone to use pot, which studies have shown to be addictive and a gateway drug. Marijuana is the new “soma” that was used in the novel Brave New World to keep the people drugged, ignorant and complacent so that the government could run over them roughshod .

  16. Inferring that white people have a higher consumption rate than other groups is despicable ! This goes with the Marxist/neo Bolshevik’s plan to divide everyone into warring groups to make us easier to control. This country today has a caste system that makes India’s pale by comparison. All of it to prevent unity among people and keep an “elite “ group in control. We are learning who they are and as in the kjv Bible , Jesus says, “by their works you shall know them” . Ask yourself who it is that has bathed the world in blood and fire!

  17. We are being taxed SS. They will tax everything. Protect the people of NM. Some states have lifted the SS tax. Why not NM? We need representatives that protect the people.
