As the national redistricting battle escalates, New Mexico has emerged as one of the most glaring examples of partisan gerrymandering—drawing renewed attention to the state’s congressional maps crafted by Democrats during the last redistricting cycle. While Texas Republicans face criticism for efforts to redraw maps in their favor ahead of the 2026 elections, what’s being ignored by many in the media is that Democrats in states like New Mexico and Illinois have already executed aggressive power grabs of their own.
In 2021, New Mexico Democrats used their legislative majority to redraw the state’s congressional districts in a way that dramatically altered political representation. The new map carved up conservative-leaning areas and created districts sprawling across vast and unrelated parts of the state, allowing Democrats to gain control of all three of New Mexico’s congressional seats. The most extreme example is the Third Congressional District, which now stretches from the southeastern city of Hobbs to the Four Corners region in the northwest—a drive that takes over eight hours and 35 minutes. The district covers radically different economic and cultural regions, making coherent representation nearly impossible. Communities of interest were fractured, and rural voices were diluted, all to ensure a Democrat stronghold.
This approach mirrors what far-left Democrats in Illinois did when they designed a map that created a 14-3 advantage in the state’s congressional delegation. In both states, political expediency—not fair representation—was the guiding principle. While Democrats in New Mexico loudly decry gerrymandering elsewhere, they executed the same strategy they now condemn.
The New Mexico map is also under scrutiny for its reliance on racial considerations in the line-drawing process. The Supreme Court recently announced it will rehear a case out of Louisiana that challenges the constitutionality of creating majority-minority districts using race as the primary factor. That decision could directly impact states like New Mexico, where race-based gerrymandering may be subject to strict judicial review.
Meanwhile, Democrats in Texas are traveling the country to sound the alarm about what they call Republican efforts to suppress minority votes through redistricting. A group of Texas House Democrats recently met with New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in Santa Fe to rally support for their cause. Texas Rep. Joe Moody claimed, “Right now in Texas, there is a political power grab coming from Washington, D.C., coming from the Trump White House to dismantle districts, to racially gerrymander districts, disenfranchising brown and Black Texans.”
Moody and his colleagues warned that redistricting battles in Texas are not isolated incidents, and that they could set a precedent for other states. Yet there was no mention of the fact that Democrats in New Mexico already redrew maps that broke up conservative and rural communities while artificially stacking others to secure safe Democrat seats.
While media and Democrat leaders label Republican-led redistricting efforts as “assaults on democracy,” they have remained largely silent on similar, and in nearly all cases worse, gerrymandering moves by their own party. Republicans in Texas are now doing exactly what Democrats in New Mexico have already done: redrawing maps with unashamed political motivation. The only difference is who’s holding the pen.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. I am against any state gerrymandering the districts. Until the laws are adjusted to stop it we have to work with what we have. Good for TX, go for it.
Let’s not forget when they divided Hobbs probably one of the reddest counties in New Mexico to keep Yvette Harrell from being reelected. New Mexico Democrats can’t stand the fact that nobody likes their policies so they must must divide and conquer conservative districts in order for them to implement their failed policies that have been destroying this state for 90 plus years. What a pathetic bunch of losers. And the only way they can keep their control is to destroy our educational system so children don’t know what the heck is going on nor do they know history so they will be deemed to repeat it over and over and over. This is what communism and slavery looks like!
HYPOCRISY at it’s finest !!!!
…and… as i recall… the NMSC found the DNC did gerrymander the new districts… in favor of the DNC… and… the NMSC told us, it was too late in the election cycle to return to the recommended districts… the submitted non partisan ones…
2.5 years later… the gerrymandered districts still exists.
WTF over?
Anyone want to explain that?
Anyone…?
Why are they still in place?
100 percent correct. it just shows you apathetic and corrupt this state is. the people that live here dont care. just give me more freebies and we vote for you.
What do YOU not understand? Democrat power & control on full display in NM. Their party memo – “The end justifies the means.” They work & govern in “LOCK STEP!” As they say up in Northern N.M., Can not beat it, better get used to it.
If it wasn’t for double standards the democrats wouldn’t have any standards. MLG and the rest of the NM socialist party aka democrats are trying to emulate Newsome and Bass and their California
Like someone else said, gerrymandering should be outlawed but u til then the libtards can cry me a river! Even so, after 4 years of Biden, open borders, fentanyl, and NGO grift, if New Mexico residents haven’t got a clue, something is afoul. Our Republican candidates need to be eloquent in drawing distinction in the upcoming elections and take off the kid gloves if they have to. Get rid of the lawn gnome dictator and her ilk like Sedillo and Stewart and their elitist communist drones. They call the Democrats the party of the people but they are the party of Marxism, big government, cheating, and elitist power at all costs. No more electronic voting! Paper ballots to prevent stealing elections like they did in Arizona and the entire nation on 2020!
Great post George. You nailed it.
democrats never grew up. they are the kid you saw screaming and crying in the grocery store for their mother to buy them candy. they are still screaming and crying, mostly about imagined problems. i am beyond tired of these losers.
Then-Speaker of the NM House Brian Egolf (D) not only admitted his party would seek to gerrymander Yvette Herrell out of her third district seat, he actually bragged and boasted about it, publicly and LOUDLY. He ANNOUNCED that the NM Democrat Party would do exactly that, and sure enough, they did. They have done the same thing in Illinois where Dems now have a 14-3 advantage over Republicans among the state’s Congressional delegation, and in California, where the Dems engineered and maintain an advantage over Republicans of 43 seats to 9 seats. There is currently NO ONE in either Santa Fe or D.C. who is representing our conservative interests.
the trial lawyers lead by egolf at that time in the legislature passed a law allowing them to sue the state of nm for some type of civil rights violations. it was all to enable them to get rich suing the state they claim to represent. this is what the voters in NM have put into office. i have never seen a populace so disintersted in their govt that allows that govt to play them for fools and patsies every day, all while staying silent and voting for more of it.
In the 29 years I’ve lived here, I had a Republican Representative and a Repub Senator in Santa Fe, who were very responsive to my concerns. Now, gerrymandering has given me a Dem “representative” from Corrales and a Dem Senator from Santa Fe, as well as all the exclusive Dem “representation” in DC. I have a couple of issues that I’d like addressed but I’ll be damned if I ask those aholes for help!
When the Dems shifted the state Rep districts, Rebeca Dow was gerrymander out of the 38th District she was a Rep in and planning to run again. Not to be bullied, she moved a few blocks to be back in the district. Now she is a Representative again. They tried to weaken Republican vote in House District 22 to remove Representative Stefani Lord by taking out the Conservative strong hold of Edgewood and outing Edgewood in HD 50. That also failed as Rep Lord won her seat twice. It gave me the opportunity to stand up to socialist McQueen. Though I was not successful it opened the door for more Republican opposition in HD 50. As the saying goes, if first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And that is exactly what I am going to do. Try again.
Keep your health up. Keep your spirits up. Hit the pavement. Find a cause that all can get behind…like stopping “State Taxes on all Funeral Homes and stop TAXING the Grieving Family Survivors”… like medications, and food, stop TAXING DEATH as a new campaign slogan…
