U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez (D-NM), a far-leftist in Congress, is once again attacking commonsense border protections—this time railing against President Donald Trump’s directive to establish a military buffer zone along the U.S.-Mexico border from California through New Mexico.
In a statement issued Monday, Vasquez called the strategic deployment of military assets to secure the Roosevelt Reservation—a federally controlled strip of land 60 feet wide running the length of the border from California to New Mexico—“misguided and wasteful,” dismissing the President’s action as a “made-for-TV stunt.” His full-throated opposition comes even as his own district, located in New Mexico’s Second Congressional District, includes numerous border communities grappling daily with illegal crossings, drug smuggling, and human trafficking.
Despite these serious threats, Vasquez continues to undermine efforts to restore control at the border. He bizarrely claimed that Trump’s move comes “during a record time of low crossing numbers” — thanks to the President’s actions to protect the homeland, unlike his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Vasquez’s hostility toward border security is nothing new. He has consistently taken fringe positions aligned with open-borders activists. On his official Twitter account, Vasquez denounced the border wall as “racist” and called for it to be “torn down,” declaring: “Let’s tear it down. The wall is not only ineffective and costly—it is a symbol of hate. It’s time for a new approach rooted in compassion and real solutions.”
In the same post, Vasquez accused border enforcement infrastructure of being “a symbol of hate,” further cementing his record of prioritizing inflammatory rhetoric over practical solutions. This is despite overwhelming evidence that fencing, surveillance, and manpower are key deterrents to illegal border crossings and criminal enterprise along the U.S.-Mexico corridor.
The far-left congressman also has repeatedly voted against banning criminal aliens from voting in U.S. elections — further cementing his push to promote illegal immigration into the country.
Vasquez’s open-borders language and continued embrace of policies that weaken U.S. sovereignty paint a troubling picture. At a time when border communities are overwhelmed, and national security threats loom large, Vasquez appears more concerned with political theater and virtue signaling than with protecting his own constituents. His repeated rejection of efforts to strengthen America’s borders not only puts New Mexicans at risk—it betrays the very oath he took as a member of Congress.

The U.S. military was on the border in 1916 to deter Pancho Villa from crossing. They successfully beat back his invasion of Columbus, NM on March 9, 1916.
Is there a viable GOP candidate to run against him? Yes, gerrymandering helped but not having a strong candidate helped more.

I agree 100% Travis we need John Block to run against him and we need him to come on down to Bernalillo County where they gerrymandered the district (South Valley-I believe that is how Vasquez won) Yvette Herrell never came or did anything to help the constituents of the South Valley). Vasquez was always in a photo shot doing something with Bernalillo County-South Valley constituents.
We also need to find a strong Republican to run for governor. The RNC is doing nothing to search for our next candidate.

Most of you are correct, our elections are rigged, the voting districts were redrawn to ensure democrats would win. The folks we send to DC were also won with strokes of a key pad. Gabe is a citizen of the US but he believes he is still a Mexica. That is his right but it should turn most US citizens off to not vote for him. But we do have a large population of folks from south of the border and many will not vote for a non south of the border person. This is why NM has the worst schools in the nation, are 3rd worst in government properly spending our tax dollars, we are leading the country in killing unborn babies, we allow schools to determine our children’s sex and to change their sex without parent consent. Our government is slowly taking our 2nd Amendment rights away. Yes if it is bad government NM is in the lead, wake up people but if you follow John Block you are the choir to the problem.
This exemplifies exactly why I’m leaving the state after 50 years…. im not going to know what to do when I have a representative…..any representative that aligns with my beliefs and values. Here in Albuquerque I have no state senator, representative, and of course we have nothing at the federal level either. We have a few strong Republicans representing us, and many weak ones, but this state continues to get worse, and never better. Never say that it cant get any worse, because the dems will take that as a challenge and say, “here, hold my beer”.

I live in Vasquez’s district and I DID NOT vote for him and don’t know anyone who did. But, I live in Socorro county not in a democrat area. Socorro went red in 2024. Instead of complaining on this site do what I did and contact him and tell him how you feel. I continually contact him and tell him how he favors illegal criminals over his NM citizen constituents. His response is always lies how he supports law and order which contradicts his votes and actions.
