At a high-profile White House gathering of state leaders, President Donald Trump made his policy positions unmistakably clear. Among those in attendance was far-left Democrat New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham—a governor whose state relies heavily on federal funding and now faces a stark choice. New Mexico, one of the nation’s most federally dependent states, could see billions in federal aid vanish if it dares to defy Trump’s directives.
During the meeting of the National Governors Association, Trump reiterated his readiness to cut off federal dollars from any state that does not toe the line. This firm stance echoes the earlier showdown with Maine’s Gov. Janet Mills, who vowed to take legal action if federal funding were withheld. “Any time a public interaction like that takes place, it’s coming from a person who’s grounded in their values,” noted Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer—a sentiment that underscores the high stakes for states whose budgets are intricately tied to federal support.

Governor Lujan Grisham’s presence was a clear reminder that New Mexico’s financial well-being is on the line. Federal funds account for a substantial portion of the state’s annual budget, and analysts warn that any move to buck Trump’s policies could trigger cuts amounting to billions of dollars. For a state that depends on this support for critical services and infrastructure, such a loss would be devastating.
Throughout the discussions, some state leaders attempted to find common ground. Yet, the underlying message was unambiguous: challenging the Trump administration’s policies is not without serious consequences. “I got to put the people’s interests before my own interests, before my partisan interest. I got a job to do,” one governor declared, highlighting the heavy burden of leadership when federal dollars are at stake.
Supporters of President Trump argue that his decisive actions are necessary to maintain accountability and fiscal discipline across the country. In their view, Trump’s tough stance is not an overreach but a vital measure to ensure that states remain aligned with national priorities.

For New Mexico, this means that Lujan Grisham must carefully weigh her policy choices. A refusal to cooperate could result in severe financial repercussions that would undermine state programs and services relied on by millions of New Mexicans.
In a political landscape where partisan idealism sometimes overshadows practical governance, the decision facing Lujan Grisham is clear. Aligning with Trump’s policies could secure New Mexico’s continued flow of federal support, while defiance may not only isolate the state from critical funding but also set a dangerous precedent for other Democrat-led states. With New Mexico’s fiscal future at a crossroads, the stakes could not be higher.
I just heard today that Elon Musk visited LANL and left unimpressed.
The Sierra Club practically runs the legislature on matters bordering on what they call climate change. Rules that would mandate electric vehicles are part of their agenda. SB84 and SB4 are two of their bills that will undoubtedly pass. You can look them up to see the text.
NM is a messed up state because the elected ones like Grisham don’t care one bit about us the people. Then Harsland is wanting to run we ARE GOING TO BE SCREWED IF SHE IS NEXT GOVERNOR. ElECTRIC VEHICELS COmeE ON HOW STUPID CAN THEY BE.STOPPING OIL DRILLING.THE GREEN NEW DEAL CLiMATE CHANGE. GET REAL.WE NEED PEOPLE THAT ARNT SELF CENTERED AND MONEY GRUBBERS. AnD ACT AS STUPID AS GRiSHUM.and Haaland.
I hope you are well aware that oil is a finite resource that one day will be no more and as it dwindles it just means the price of oil and gas will go up and up and up. So no, continuing the stupid chant of “drill baby drill” is ridiculously naive and narrow minded. We have to have alternative energies for both our homes, buildings,.. and especially vehicles. It’s imperative that we are well prepared for the future.
How will it help us to leave the oil and gas in the ground?
The oil and gas have been around for a long time and will continue to be produced. I worked in the oil field, drill baby drill started in 1973 and it had been in operation decades before I started. You don’t know if it’s a finite resource or if it naturally replenishes. Drill baby drill is the answer to high prices and national security. The oil reserves depleted by Biden’s foolish decisions need to be replaced, they’re called Strategic Oil Reserves for a reason.
Agree with Pat Cordell. We have seen how expensive and dangerous the electric cars are. What is the mining of lithium going to do to our country. It’s ridiculous. The huge wind turbines they are using now are also a huge waste. They are run by desiel. They have a short life span and are then are just dumped into piles where they pollute our land and water. All this green fuel, ect are lies made up by money grubbing politicians and business people. Grisham is an egotistical, dishonest, greedy parasite. She cares nothing about New Mexico or the people. She’s just getting what she can for herself. Musk needs to look into her and her cohorts. They all are as shadey as they come. She is ruining our once beautiful state.
While it is true that oil is finite in its availability, N.M. has little choice but to drill and pump. Without the oil industry N.M. has little else to produce.
Alternate energy sources are being developed but the current pace is slow and at least a decade away. At present, wind and solar power production is neither economical or efficient. It is all being subsidized at an astronomical cost.
Do you realize that even electric cars will use oil? I don’t know if electric cars need to be lubed but the still need tires to remain on the roads that also have oil in and on them.
That is one of the lies we have been told, to keep the wealth in the hands of the elite. Just like water, oil is abundant and a naturally renewing resource compliments of our Creator. Cultivate to Elevate has research on this. Nikola Tesla free energy is our future. Energy created out of the ether is abundant and the technology is there, it just has been hidden. Uncle John Trump worked with Tesla at MIT and had access to his research. This along with zero point energy among others is part of Trump’s infrastructure plan. Over 5000 patents have been declassified by Trump that were hidden to keep humanity enslaved to paying the globalist companies for things the Creator gave us for free. What do you think Space Force is based on? Look it up. The truth is out there and you will not hear about this on the MSM .

AGREE!!
Our New Mexico governor doesn’t care about New Mexico citizens. She protects illegal immigrants like they are gold. Evidently you uses them for cheap labor on her property. She has to resign immediately
That is because she is taking kickbacks from the cartels. https://rumble.com/v6lpde7–feb-15-2025-chief-shawn-taylor-w-nino-bombshell-new-money-laundering-evide.html
They are laundering money through real estate and Act Blue. This police chief has been investigating this for years. Our governor is allegedly in on this.
I live here in southern NM, and I’m not impressed either.
She has never cared about New Mexicans especially the ones in the south. I hope President Trump is keeping an eye on her. We citizens deserve the best our state has to offer
Grisham is as stubborn as a mule, so I don’t see her changing her ways and doing what President Trump wants. The people will suffer as usual because of her.
I think NM Dem candidates will be in serious trouble n the next election cycle if MLG doesn’t back down and if we lose our federal funding. Maybe then the Dem voters will finally wake up.
History repeats itself. It’s not just a saying it is proven by history itself.
The woman is ( to borrow a Southern Expression) “Ate up with herself. “AKA…Prideful, Arrogant and Short Sighted.”
People just look at the wall ( Party Affiliation) and don’t look past what is inside the building itself.
We have gotten what we paid for.
“As the Haboob blows; so goes the lives of New Mexicans.”
Good New Mexico doesn’t deserve to be a State. Split it up between Texas and Arizona.
As a native Texan, I seriously doubt that Texas would want to claim any part of New Mexico. Living in NM for several years to be near some of my family has been been an eye-opening experience, to say the least. I feel bad for the good people – aka the critical thinkers who see the truth of things – of New Mexico – and there are many – who are so in the minority here. This is a generational welfare state deadlocked by democrats assisted by a herd mentality population trained to vote for democrats who for decades have driven their state into crime and poverty.
You hit that one on the nail. People need to wake up and stop voting for the Democraps who are only out to do the bidding of MLG. And God have mercy on us all if Haaland (dumber than a rock) is voted in to be governor of NM.
Texas would love the rest of the Permian Basin that is in NM. And that would completely crater NM, even though MLG and her cronies continue to try to kill oil and gas drilling. The Ds in Santa Fe may be facing the demise of this state. Parts of us would be happy to be in TX or AZ.
Well said!
You just perfectly described this state. Many generations of welfare takers who don’t see the need to do better. There are lots of fine people here, but the attitude that some must vote democrat just because family always has must stop if things are to change.
yep
That’s interesting because in the last decade the state has made a lot of major changes and it’s no longer even in the top 20 list nationally for crime. I happen to live in downtown Abq in Barelas, a low income neighborhood, and everyone here keeps it clean, takes care of things, and nobody in this area seems to have crime issues. When it does happen in the city it always seems to stem from teenage kids or the homeless. I also say this after having moved from idyllic San Diego which was about as good as it gets. But so far, Albuquerque is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
Not by a country mile.
Very accurate and well articulated description. I may have to borrow it.
I want to return to the Texas Republic. Everything East of the Rio Grande in NM will become TX.
I like that. Albuquerque, Texas!
NO! The middle of the state needs to be left to themselves! The Rio Grande corridor is our problem. They are the reason NM is in trouble. The east side needs to revert to territory status. Then reapply for statehood.
As a new resident of New Mexico I would 1000% fight you on that with all the toys I’ve bought in the last 20 years. Nice metals ones.
Now I know why people here don’t like Texans. You and Abbot need to handle your own s—t and stay in your lane.
MLG will allow NM to shrivel up and die by her stubbornness, than to give way to Trump, DOGE, or any other form of integrity.
New Mexico!, if you do not take note on how the Dems are responding, then you are truly fools…
Do Better!
It doesn’t appear that MLG will play hard ball like Maine’s Governor. Her tactics usually lean more toward straddling the fence. She doesn’t have strong convictions but instead seems to go along with what benefits her in the moment. She may say and appear to continue the WOKE narrative, but I predict she will cave to the pressure of the new regime. Protecting her hide is her main agenda now.
I agree Kimberly, she has no backbone. She’s not here for us just herself.
MLG is a stupid, selfish, degenerate fool. Those who voted for get fall under the same umbrella.
You are so right, RMG!
Sell NM back to Mexico, mlg is turning the Land of Enchantment into a wasteland!!!!
NewMexico, there’s a new sheriff in town- Trump.
I believe it was sun Tzu the Chinese poet warrior who said “ a tyrant will burn down their country to rule over the ashes”. MLG must be brought to heel by president Trump. She showed us during the Covid debacle that she is a soulless communist tyrant that cares nothing for the will of the people. Unfortunately her fellow comrades in the legislature and the courts feel the same. There are no adults in the room. NM is in a deep dark place that only federal intervention may possibly help. We must support president Trump on this issue and deal the commies a blow to have a ray of hope that people will wake up to a better future by ridding ourselves of these despicable leftists that have ruined NM.
Mrs. Grisham governs a state that is among the highest in poverty, DWI arrests, etc., yet spends 10 million of hard-working taxpayer’s money on an abortion clinic so that women can kill their babies. That’s not leadership, that’s partisianship.
MLG, “resistance is futile.”
NM has a lot of good folks that do not pay attention to the government actions, they are too busy working, taking care of their families and who knows what else. This is why they vote the democrats in over and over again. I welcome Trump to cut off all funds to NM because our government goes against every conservative value. Maybe then NMs will wake up and see how our government has put on our state in the worst condition possible. We have the worst school, highest crime, 3 worst in government spending, 3rd to last in most measurable statistics
And how does this affect the DD Waiver program? I’d like to know so I can be prepared in case we lose funding and my clients lose their waiver. I have a plan b but I’d still like to know.
We are the worst of the states. The young adults cannot read as the schools are so bad and continue to be.Crime is the highest of all the states. We are down to 1bathroom when out for the ones confused about their sex… But money for a planned parenthood facility to kill babies up to birth, and most likely after. I also pray for federal intervention!
Without Federal Funding, Contractors will begin to leave the state. The state government is over bloated and could use a bit of DOGE itself to get back on track so NM can be less dependent on Federal Funding.
What happened to the billions of dollars that were brought in by oil taxes during the years before the liberals shut it down??? Where is that money???
The NM government needs to be cut by 80% by DOGE and Trump. The waste is incredible, only exceeded by corruption. LANL and Sandia could also be cut by 80% (I’m a retiree and know first hand) by just eliminating overhead and administration, not to mention research efforts that duplicate what is done (and better) elsewhere in the US Government. Seems like a primary reason New Mexicans vote for Dems is to keep the Federal dollars flowing. Time to wake up.
I wholeheartedly agree with David. As a retiree of Sandia National Labs, I can vouch for the fact that there is a lot of waste. Intelligent scientists and engineers can always make a case for spending more money, but that doesn’t mean it’s justified. And there is lots of administrative overhead.
From article:
“A refusal to cooperate could result in severe financial repercussions that would undermine state programs and services relied on by millions of New Mexicans.”
New Mexicos population is a little over 2 million.
NM could start with cutting down the NM Dept of Health – too many adminstrators, program managers, middle management in general, cut ALL services to non-residents, let them go back to their own country and get WIC and food stamps.
MLG took a quarter of a million dollars from George Soros on her first run and we now all know he has gotten most of his money from USAID so he gave her taxpayers money! Then with the corrupt voting machines in place she and the SOS rigged the machines! She needs to be Audited! ASAP
To the 32 commentators: Get a spine!
Stand up to the bully and his billionaire friends.
Support the democracy you grew up in. The fight is on!
I will acknowledge your typo. Stand up to the bully (MLG) and “her” billionaire (and millionaire) friends.
You are welcome!
Bring it on.
I 1000% agree. Cutting funding to NM serves to help no one but Trump so that he can do things like invade Gaza and then build a hotel that only HE would profit from. People talk about slashing XYZ but how is that actually going to help. What people need to do instead is ask how the money could be better allocated instead.
And start talking about the elephant in the room, the US Military and DOD. If you actually are so concerned with saving the federal government money, then why are none of you taking about that instead since it is nearly 50% of ever tax dollar. How about you focus on that instead of killing repairs and infrastructure projects in the state, and even worse taking food, clothes, shelter, and education away from a state that desperately needs it. If you fools think crime is bad now.. stop giving people hope and food and you’ll see what it’s actually about. THINK.
I’ll support the restoration of our Constitutional Republic, thank you very much. You can continue listening to the propaganda BS. BTW, recite the Pledge of Allegiance while you’re at it. “And to the Republic, for which it stands”. Sound familiar?
Our governor needs to start fighting against this transmission corridor, that they want to run down the eastern side of the state. It’s nothing but a land grab, she’s probably been bought off by the developer’s. Who have the Department of Energy speaking on their behalf. The majority of Clovis will be lost to this corridor along with grazing lands and small towns. This corridor could be 5 to 100 miles wide, a lot of families stand to lose everything. An we hear crickets from our local government, state representatives and our governor.
Remember this when you go to vote again in 2026. An be sure to thank your local Cattlemens Association, because they are the ones truly fighting for all of us.
Just a thought. Living in NM CD-2, having SF redistrict our district to prevent Republicans for being Voted in. Trump needs to Get HR-22 nationwide voter ID SIGNED INTO law! That action will change the electoral count in NM. We have to get rid of M.T. Oliver NM SOS. she sabotages every Referendum petition & prevents election security!
