Heinrich all but confirms he’s running for governor in 2026

New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich is setting the stage for a likely run for governor in 2026, signaling a shift that could push the state further to the left. While Heinrich has not made an official announcement, his remarks leave little room for doubt. When asked by the outlet Semafor about a possible gubernatorial bid, he coyly responded, “I don’t really have anything to share today.” This non-denial has fueled speculation that he’s positioning himself for the role.

Heinrich’s political track record suggests he’ll bring a brand of far-left policies to the New Mexico governor’s office. Known for his advocacy of expansive green energy initiatives, Heinrich’s alignment with progressive climate policies is poised to shape his campaign platform. He’s expected to use his potential new role as the lead Democrat on the Senate Energy Committee to bolster his credentials as an environmental hardliner. Critics argue that these policies place ideology above practicality, risking energy reliability and driving up consumer costs.

Senator Ben Ray Luján, Heinrich’s colleague, underscored his influence in Washington, recalling how he urged former New Mexico Senators Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman to remain in the Senate for the good of the state. “I think very highly of Martin,” Luján said, but many conservatives question whether Heinrich’s influence has actually benefited New Mexicans, given the economic impact of his policy priorities.

Heinrich’s record is dotted with extreme statements that have raised eyebrows. From his calls for more stringent environmental regulations to his support for “equity-driven” economic policies, critics argue his positions cater to the farthest edges of the Democrat Party.

His past support for curbing traditional energy production has drawn fire from industry leaders, who warn that such moves could cost New Mexico jobs and increase residents’ energy bills. He also primarily lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he moved his family after being elected to Congress.

Some speculate that Joe Biden’s lame-duck Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, a former congresswoman, could also enter the gubernatorial race, creating a potential battle between two far-left heavyweights. But for now, all eyes are on Heinrich, whose maneuvers signal that his ambitions for 2026 are already in motion.

With New Mexico’s economic future at stake, Heinrich’s potential run is likely to spark fierce debate. Critics argue that his far-left policies could push the state into deeper economic hardship, while supporters frame him as a champion of progressive values. As Heinrich himself said, he’s focused on “what’s best for New Mexico,” but for many, that’s exactly what’s up for debate.

NM Dems now want ‘bipartisanship,’ unity after incessant hate

Following President-elect Donald Trump’s incredible and historic victory in the election to become the 47th president of the United States, winning both the electoral and popular vote, New Mexico Democrats are taking a drastic turn from their partisanship.

After the Democrats’ decisive defeat, New Mexico Democrat politicians are trying to urge Republicans to now come to the table after leftists have gone on years-long tirades, legal battles, witch hunts, and attacks against Republicans, specifically supporters of President-elect Trump.

Sen. Martin Heinrich, who is now in the minority in the U.S. Senate, tried to have his cake and eat it, too, saying he wants Republicans to work with him to find “common ground,” while also bashing Trump, claiming he has an “extreme and divisive agenda.”

Far-left Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham released her own word salad statement, imploring unity with Republicans, who she has demeaned for six years as governor.

“With the election in the rear-view mirror, I encourage all New Mexicans––regardless of political affiliation––to come together and work in a bipartisan way to build on our successes and continue solving our shared challenges,” she wrote.

After the governor’s statement, state Rep. John Block (R-Alamogordo) wrote, “No. Expect the greatest possible amount of resistance every single step of the way these next two years. You have treated us like garbage for six long years, called us lizard people, bashed our sheriffs, snatched our rights, raised our taxes, killed our jobs, locked down our families, abused taxpayer dollars, settled sex assault claims, and bashed anyone who disagrees with you — even members of your own party — with hate and vitriol. Expect your agenda to stall and die on the vine because it’s time for ALL Republicans (and hopefully some Democrats) to unite to crush your extremist agenda, which has poisoned our once-great state. But we will heal our land. #MAGA”

In a different post, state Rep. Stefani Lord (R-Sandia Park) wrote, “New Mexican Democrat politicians need to pause for just a moment and reflect on the high number of people who voted for Trump here in our state. It was not a Kamala landslide by any means. Nearly half the people didn’t vote for her. That means that a large number of New Mexicans voted not only for Trump but also against everything Kamala stood for,” adding, “Americans are not on board with the radical progressive agenda that is consistently being pushed and marginalizes the moderate democrats, especially in New Mexico. I seriously hope you remember this when drafting bills for this next session.”

Far-left Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller wrote following Harris’ defeat a similar message to that of Heinrich and Lujan Grisham, writing, “As Mayor, I will always stand up for and serve every resident of our city. While many are anxious about what a second Trump presidency will mean, in [Albuquerque] we will continue to work together, respect one another, and fight for a better future for our families.”

Other leftist politicians, such as New Mexico House Speaker Javier Martinez and New Mexico House Majority Whip Reena Szczepanski, defended Harris’ campaign and attempted to run cover for the lame-duck former Democrat nominee, while others, such as Rep. Melanie Stansbury attempted to inflame voters with the same tropes that led to their presidential election defeat, claiming Trump and his supporters are a “threat to democracy” and women’s rights.

Heinrich makes possibly the most unhinged post of the 2024 election cycle

Severely triggered by the news that 45th President Donald Trump is visiting Albuquerque Thursday for a rally, vulnerable far-left Democrat Sen. Martin Heinrich, who faces a tough reelection battle against Republican Nella Domenici, posted possibly the most unhinged theory about the election on X.

Trump’s campaign, which announced the rally on Sunday via a signup link, wrote in a press release, “New Mexico families want to save more of their hard-earned paychecks and make sure their families are safe. Under Kamala Harris’ failed leadership, neither is feasible. Kamala’s Border Blood Bath has wreaked havoc on New Mexico,” concluding, “Kamala Harris broke New Mexico, President Trump will fix it.”

Despite Trump’s bold move to visit New Mexico, which he could win, according to polls showing him in the margin of error against Harris, Heinrich has his own wacky conspiracy theory about the 45th President’s visit to the Land of Enchantment.

“Why is Trump campaigning in NYC and Albuquerque? Because he’s NOT campaigning. He knows he’s losing,” Heinrich wrote.

He then added, “These are Insurrection 2.0 rallies. He’s pumping up his supporters for denial and violence,” erroneously claiming that Trump was losing despite all betting odds, polls in swing states, and political polling averages indicating he is on track to win the presidency, and even possibly winning New Mexico’s five electoral votes.

The 45th President’s rally will be in Albuquerue at noon on Halloween (October 31, 2024), and be his first time back to New Mexico since his 2019 rally, which saw massive crowds.

He also visited New Mexico twice in 2016, with rallies at the Albuquerque Convention Center and an airport hangar near the Albuquerque Sunport, the latter of which was reported to be the location of his Thursday rally.

With deeply unpopular Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and members of the state’s far-left congressional delegation stumping for Harris, that could further assist Trump in carrying New Mexico and its electoral votes as the election is just a single week away.

Domenici forces Heinrich to defend radical record in high-stakes TV debate

In their only televised debate before the upcoming general election, Republican Senate candidate Nella Domenici sharply criticized her far-left Democrat opponent, Martin Heinrich, a resident of Maryland, on several key issues, consistently putting him on the defensive.

The debate, aired earlier than planned due to Monday Night Football on KOAT 7, revealed stark differences between the two candidates, but Domenici’s focused attacks often left Heinrich struggling to provide satisfying responses.

One of the most memorable moments came when Domenici pressed Heinrich on his stance regarding energy independence. Domenici made a powerful case that the United States needs to bolster both renewable energy and traditional oil and gas production to remain a global leader. “If we are not an energy-independent country, we cannot be the leader of the free world,” Domenici asserted, leaving Heinrich scrambling to defend his position. While Heinrich tried to argue that the oil and gas industry no longer requires government subsidies, Domenici’s clear and direct statement cut through his response, making Heinrich’s comments appear evasive in comparison.

Domenici also managed to trap Heinrich on immigration and border security, an issue that has long been a point of contention in New Mexico. She linked the high number of fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the state directly to Heinrich’s support for weak border policies, painting him as disconnected from the realities faced by local communities. Heinrich, while pointing to his support for the Fend Off Fentanyl Act, could not shake Domenici’s criticism that drugs are “pouring in” due to insufficient border security. Her tough stance on immigration and border enforcement resonated with voters concerned about the rise in crime and drug trafficking in New Mexico, further weakening Heinrich’s defense.

On abortion, Domenici hit Heinrich again, forcing him to justify his claim that she would contribute to a national abortion ban if elected. Heinrich argued that Domenici’s first vote would be to support a Republican Senate majority leader who would likely push for such legislation. Domenici fired back, calling his comments “the most sexist” she had ever heard. “I’m a very successful, educated, professional businesswoman, and I will not be told by any senator in Washington what to vote on and how to vote on it,” she declared, decisively countering Heinrich’s argument. By framing his stance as patronizing, Domenici turned the issue back on Heinrich, showing that she was not easily cornered by his talking points.

Throughout the debate, Heinrich found himself on the defensive, particularly when Domenici questioned his handling of school safety and gun control. While Heinrich touted his proposed Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion Act, aimed at regulating assault weapons, Domenici deftly shifted the focus to border security once again, arguing that guns wouldn’t find their way into schools if the border were better protected. Domenici’s argument painted Heinrich as too focused on narrow, ineffectual solutions while ignoring the broader issue of illegal weapons flowing across the border.

On education, Domenici’s advocacy for school vouchers and more options for parents further exposed Heinrich’s rigidity. While Heinrich argued that school vouchers would defund public schools, Domenici made a compelling case that the state needs more charter, parochial, and magnet schools to give students better opportunities.

“It’s imperative that our parents have options for their students,” she said, making Heinrich’s defense of the status quo seem insufficient in addressing the ongoing struggles of New Mexico’s education system.

Even on bipartisanship, where Heinrich tried to tout his past achievements, Domenici pushed back, emphasizing her unique ability to work across the aisle. “When I spend time in Washington, I have instant access to many, many of the senior legislators, because my name still carries with it a huge amount of bipartisan respect,” she said, referencing her late father, Senator Pete Domenici. Heinrich’s attempts to showcase his own bipartisan efforts fell flat in comparison, as Domenici repeatedly highlighted her deep ties to both sides of the political spectrum.

In the end, Domenici’s sharp, direct attacks consistently put Heinrich on the back foot. Whether on energy, immigration, or education, she painted him as out of touch and overly reliant on partisan talking points, while she presented herself as a practical, no-nonsense candidate who could deliver real results for New Mexico.

Republican momentum grows in key New Mexico races as campaigns heat up

Momentum is building for New Mexico Republicans as two high-profile races, for the U.S. Senate and the state’s Second Congressional District, show vital signs of GOP support in what has been considered a Democrat stronghold in recent years.

In a recent fundraising email, U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) rallied support for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Nella Domenici, who is challenging incumbent far-left Democrat Sen. Martin Heinrich. Lummis highlighted Domenici’s surprising rise in the polls, showing her within single digits of Heinrich, with 21% of voters still undecided. Domenici, daughter of former New Mexico U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, has made waves by out-raising Heinrich in her first quarter, positioning New Mexico’s Senate race as a potential flip for Republicans.

Lummis emphasized Domenici’s dedication to core Republican issues, including securing borders, promoting economic stability, and boosting domestic energy production. “Nella has my full support, and she’s on the brink of taking the lead in a race Democrats never thought they would have to fight,” Lummis wrote. She called for grassroots mobilization to sustain Domenici’s momentum, urging donors to invest in what could be a pivotal contest for control of the U.S. Senate.

Meanwhile, in New Mexico’s Second Congressional District, Republican candidate Yvette Herrell is gaining ground in a tightly contested race against incumbent far-left Democrat Rep. Gabe Vasquez. Herrell’s campaign released polling numbers from The Tarrance Group showing her leading Vasquez 48% to 46%, with a 4.9% margin of error. Herrell attributed her lead to voters’ growing dissatisfaction with the Biden administration’s policies and Vasquez’s alignment  with a “radical agenda.”

Herrell’s message to supporters emphasized the need to press on during this crucial phase of the campaign. “Momentum is on our side, but this is FAR from mission accomplished,” Herrell stated, warning that the Democrats would likely ramp up attacks as her lead grows. Herrell has positioned herself as a staunch opponent of what she describes as Vasquez’s “open borders” policies and his opposition to anti-inflationary measures.

Both Domenici and Herrell have capitalized on dissatisfaction with the current administration and incumbents like Heinrich and Vasquez. They’ve drawn attention to policies they claim are out of touch with New Mexicans’ priorities, including border security and economic management. With both races heating up, Republicans see a path to flipping key seats and gaining an edge in a state once considered solidly blue.

As these campaigns head into the final stretch, the eyes of the nation are on New Mexico, where Republicans believe they can turn a historically Democrat state into a battleground in the 2024 election.

Multi-million dollar NM ad buys blister Heinrich, ‘woke’ Harris over failures

New multi-million-dollar ad buys from the group Election Freedom, Inc. blister New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich and Kamala Harris, the Democrats’ nominee for president, over their actions that increased inflation for everyday New Mexicans and created a crisis at the southern border.

The two ads ad, featuring both of the far-left politicians, don’t pull any punches with the Democrats’ attack on the working New Mexican.

The first ad declares, “Vice President Kamala Harris and Senator Martin Heinrich made inflation worse.”

“Harris and Heinrich voted for the reckless spending that drove up prices. They spent more. Now, we’re paying more. Thanks to Harris and Heinrich, housing prices and mortgage rates are soaring. Energy and gas prices have jumped, and grocery prices continue to rise.”

The other ad primarily digs into Kamala Harris, who declared that the wide-open border that covers at least 50.3 miles in New Mexico is “secure” despite the largest flow of illegal immigration in the nation’s history under the Biden-Harris administration.

The ad also hits Harris on her work to defund the police, asking New Mexicans to call her office and tell her that “woke doesn’t work for New Mexico. We need more police and lower prices.”

The ads are to air at saturation level in the New Mexico market, along with a digital spot to educate New Mexicans on the failed policies of the two Democrats’ reckless policies that have resulted in residents feeling unsafe and poorer under their watch.

According to a senior advisor for the organization, the group’s total investment in the state is well over seven figures, demonstrating that New Mexico is beginning to receive target treatment.

Emily Moreno Miller of the Trump 2020 Victory political team said regarding the ad placement, “This is the largest investment in New Mexico that we’ve seen in recent years. The resources being pumped into the state right now will put it on the map and grant this state national attention, something the left cannot ignore. This will move the needle in New Mexico, and expand the map in 2024. A message to the liberal media – do not ignore New Mexico.”

Recent polls have shown 45th President Donald Trump and U.S. Senate challenger Nella Domenici within single digits of their opponents in the Land of Enchantment.

Amid Heinrich’s lies, Domenici puts him on notice

In a bold move against dishonest campaign tactics, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Nella Domenici has issued a cease and desist letter via her attorneys to her Democrat opponent, Sen. Martin Heinrich, accusing his campaign of disseminating false and defamatory information. The letter, sent on Friday, takes aim at a television advertisement produced by Heinrich’s campaign, which falsely asserts that Domenici supports a national abortion ban—an accusation Domenici vehemently denies.

The letter, addressed to Heinrich’s campaign manager, Brad Elkins, outlines the clear and consistent position Domenici has taken on the issue of abortion. According to the cease and desist letter, Domenici’s stance is widely publicized that she does not support a national abortion ban. This stance, prominently featured on her campaign website, is backed by her appearances in television commercials, public speeches, radio interviews, and articles in reputable news outlets.

Domenici’s legal team, led by attorney Anna Mackin, argues that Heinrich’s advertisement is not only false but also deliberately misleading, intended to deceive New Mexico voters as the November 2024 election approaches. “By disseminating false statements about Ms. Domenici’s position, Heinrich is misleading New Mexico voters and is contributing to the public’s skepticism about truth in the media,” Mackin wrote. The letter highlights that even Heinrich’s own campaign materials acknowledge Domenici’s opposition to a federal abortion ban, making the ad’s claims particularly egregious.

The letter also calls for Heinrich to cease airing the ad and any other misleading materials immediately and to issue a public apology to Domenici for what her campaign describes as an “intentional, malicious misrepresentation” of her views. Failure to comply, the letter warns, could result in legal action against Heinrich’s campaign for knowingly spreading false and defamatory information.

This is not the first time Heinrich’s campaign has been accused of employing dishonest tactics. Domenici’s letter references a previous incident where Heinrich was caught disseminating false information about her positions, drawing criticism from local media outlets. This latest incident, however, marks a significant escalation, with Domenici’s legal team formally challenging Heinrich’s campaign in a public and legal forum.

The letter underscores the importance of honesty and transparency in political advertising, especially on sensitive issues like abortion. Domenici’s campaign contends that such falsehoods not only damage the integrity of the electoral process but also contribute to voter cynicism and distrust. “New Mexico voters deserve the freedom to make informed decisions on Election Day,” Mackin stated, emphasizing that Heinrich’s shady tactics undermine this fundamental democratic principle.

As the November 2024 election draws nearer, the stakes are high for both candidates. Domenici, who has built her campaign on a platform of integrity and service, views Heinrich’s actions as a direct threat to the democratic process. Her response signals a willingness to fight back against what she perceives as underhanded tactics, setting the stage for a potentially contentious legal battle if Heinrich does not retract the ad.

Recent polls show Heinrich neck-and-neck with Domenici, likely triggering his campaign’s string of untrue, patently false ads against Domenici.

New NM polling: Trump, Domenici within single digits of beating Dems

As the U.S. Presidential Election approaches, New Mexico is emerging as a critical battleground state, with new polling data shedding light on both the presidential and U.S. Senate races. Redfield & Wilton Strategies, in collaboration with The Telegraph, recently included New Mexico in its Swing State Tracker Poll, highlighting its growing significance in the national political landscape.

In the presidential race, the latest poll between July 31 and August 3 reveals that Kamala Harris holds a seven-point lead over 45th President Donald Trump in New Mexico, with Harris garnering 44% of the vote compared to Trump’s 37%. This lead suggests that New Mexico, which has traditionally leaned Democrat in recent elections, may be in contention in November. Additionally, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., running as an independent candidate, polls at 8% in New Mexico, the highest support he has received among the swing states surveyed. If Kennedy dropped out and endorsed Trump, that would give Trump an even better advantage over Harris.

Beyond the presidential race, the U.S. Senate race in New Mexico is also drawing significant attention. Incumbent Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich is currently leading his Republican challenger, Nella Domenici, by six points, with Heinrich securing 40% of the vote to Domenici’s 34%. Heinrich’s support falls four points short of Harris’ performance in the state. Domenici, on the other hand, trails Trump by three points, indicating that while she benefits from the Republican base, she has not yet matched Trump’s level of support.

Economic concerns are at the forefront for New Mexico voters, with 55% reporting that their financial situation has worsened over the past year—the highest percentage among the swing states polled. This economic anxiety is likely to play a crucial role in shaping voter preferences in both the presidential and Senate races. Despite these challenges, a plurality of New Mexicans remains cautiously optimistic about the future, with 46% expecting their financial situation to improve in the coming year.

On key issues, New Mexico voters display a nuanced trust in the candidates. Kamala Harris is favored over Donald Trump on healthcare, the environment, and the war in Ukraine, while Trump is trusted more on economic issues, immigration, and national defense. In the Senate race, Domenici could gain traction on economic and immigration concerns.

KOAT 7 slaps Heinrich with cold, hard facts after fake attack ad on Domenici

Democrat Sen. Martin Heinrich recently launched an attack ad targeting his opponent, Republican Nella Domenici, in the race for U.S. Senate. The ad, currently airing in the Albuquerque television market, claims that Domenici “hadn’t lived in New Mexico since 1973, back when Richard Nixon was president,” in an apparent attempt to hide his own lack of connection with the state. However, an investigation by KOAT 7 News reveals that this claim is false.

Key Claims Examined

In the ad, Heinrich’s campaign suggests that Domenici is not genuinely connected to New Mexico, labeling her as an outsider. The ad states, “Wall Street’s got enough senators. We need one who will fight for us.” Political analyst Brian Sanderoff believes the objective of the ad is to paint Domenici as an outsider attempting to buy a Senate seat, contrasting Heinrich’s previous campaign strategy of largely ignoring his opponent.

The Facts

Claim: Domenici Hasn’t Lived in New Mexico Since 1973

KOAT 7 News found this claim to be false. While Domenici owns properties in Connecticut and New York, she also owns a home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Records indicate that she and her husband have owned the Santa Fe property since at least 2006, maintaining it as their New Mexico residence for nearly two decades.

Claim: Domenici’s Properties

The ad also claims Domenici lives in a waterfront mansion in Connecticut and owns a $5 million apartment in New York City. KOAT 7 confirmed these claims as true. Domenici purchased the Connecticut property for $4.1 million in 2017, and her New York apartment, located on 5th Avenue, was bought for $8.6 million in 2015, now valued at approximately $9.7 million — a rather wise investment, increasing in value by over 12.7 percent or over $1 million.

Shameless Irony of Heinrich’s Background

Adding an ironic twist, Heinrich himself was not born in New Mexico. He hails from Nebraska and was raised in Missouri, only moving to New Mexico as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico.

“There is some irony in Heinrich’s ad. He himself was not born in New Mexico. He is originally from Nebraska and was raised in Missouri. He came to New Mexico when he became a graduate student at UNM,” the outlet reported.

Although his campaign asserts that “he has lived in Albuquerque ever since,” Heinrich currently resides in Silver Spring, Maryland—not in New Mexico. As widely reported after Heinrich was elected to Congress over a decade ago, Heinrich moved his entire family to primarily live in Maryland.

Slapped with Facts

KOAT 7’s investigation highlights that the core claim of Heinrich’s ad, which asserts that Domenici has not lived in New Mexico since 1973, is demonstrably false. Domenici’s long-standing connection to New Mexico, including her longtime ownership of a home in Santa Fe, contradicts the narrative portrayed in the ad.

Vasquez joins Heinrich in throwing Biden ‘to the wolves’

On Friday, Sen. Martin Heinrich, after weeks of criticism for a limp statement on Biden’s cognitive decline, finally threw the octogenarian Democrat to the wolves and called for him to drop out of the presidential race after being a fervent supporter.

He wrote, “While the decision to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is in the best interests of our country for him to step aside.”

Following Heinrich’s statement, his close far-left ally, Rep. Gabe Vasquez, who faces likely defeat in November at the hands of Republican former Congresswoman Yvette Herrell, jumped ship as well.

Vasquez wrote, “…I believe too many of our fundamental freedoms and the wellbeing of our nation are at risk under a Trump presidency and President Biden should step aside to give Democrats the best opportunity to win this November. With abortion rights under attack and our Democracy at stake, we must unite to defeat Donald Trump and MAGA extremists.”

He added, as cover, “But make no mistake, regardless of who our nominee is, my number one job will be to take care of the people of my district and continue bringing results home to New Mexico.”

Herrell wrote on X after the announcement, “After weeks of silence, Gabe finally throws Joe Biden under the bus because he knows his own re-election is in serious jeopardy. #NM02 will see this exactly for what it is: a desperate political stunt that continues to ignore the most important question – if Joe Biden is unfit to continue running, how is he fit to continue serving as President?”

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) wrote, “Gabe Vasquez is trying to pull the wool over voters’ eyes once again, this time with *another* election year stunt.”

“For weeks Vasquez said it was Biden’s decision to make and has avoided commenting on Biden’s mental ability despite being repeatedly asked by reporters, but now he’s changed his mind to save his own political career. Today, Vasquez pretended to throw Biden to the wolves, but nowhere in his statement did he answer the question on everyone’s minds: Is Joe Biden fit to serve as President?”

A statement from NRCC spokeswoman Delanie Bomar read, “Everyone can see Gabe Vasquez’s statement for what it truly is, a transparent election-year ploy to try to cling to his seat. President Biden is sitting in the Oval Office because Gabe Vasquez and Democrats hid the truth from voters and lied about the president’s condition. Gabe Vasquez must answer the question: Is Joe Biden fit to serve as President?”
