NM SOS accuses Piñon Post editor of threats for asking about voter ID

In a strange turn of events, far-left Democrat New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver accused state Rep. John Block (R-Alamogordo), the editor and founder of the Piñon Post, of making threats and harassing her via X, formerly Twitter, cooking up a conspiracy after he asked her about implementing voter ID in the state. She later declared she was going dark on the platform following backlash after she laughed at constituents about voter ID, changing her account “@NMSOSMaggie” to private, although the use of her title makes the page public — a violation of law, according to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Toulouse Oliver’s departure from the platform came shortly after the general election, during which she sought to share insights into election results and processes. However, she claimed that some of the backlash, including alleged threats and harassment, originated from Block, who did not make such threats.

During a legislative committee meeting, Toulouse Oliver accused unnamed members of the committee of contributing to the toxic environment online. Later, her office singled out Rep. Block, labeling him and Piñon Post a “frequent purveyor of false and misleading information” about elections. Block has been vocal in his push for voter ID laws in New Mexico and has criticized Toulouse Oliver’s stance against such measures.

“I wouldn’t say that he was like, the ring leader, but he was certainly getting in on the pile-on and, I think, helping to foment the anger and some of the nasty comments,” she said to one outlet.

In response, Block told the Santa Fe New Mexican, “If she thinks that asking questions about why she doesn’t support voter ID is a threat, then she’s got the thinnest skin I’ve ever seen in my life,” emphasizing that political debate should not be conflated with harassment. He further argued that Toulouse Oliver’s characterization of criticism as harassment reflects an attempt to silence dissent and control the narrative around New Mexico’s elections.

Toulouse Oliver, who has historically opposed voter ID measures, reiterated her belief that such laws are unnecessary. “That is a solution in search of a problem,” she said during the committee meeting, dismissing Block’s proposals as lacking evidence of widespread voter fraud.

The tension escalated after Toulouse Oliver shared that she would file a report with law enforcement regarding the threats she faced, which she said were “egged on” by Block’s rhetoric. Block countered by highlighting the lack of evidence directly tying him to any threatening behavior and called her allegations politically motivated. “The secretary of state is probably the biggest purveyor of propaganda, fake news, lies, and clearly orchestrated headlines to get attention,” he charged, framing her accusations as a tactic to deflect from genuine questions about election security.

Block’s criticism of Toulouse Oliver’s opposition to voter ID laws has resonated with many New Mexicans, particularly given polling that shows broad support for such measures, with Gallup finding 84% of Americans support the commonsense measure that upholds election security.

While Toulouse Oliver maintains that her resistance stems from concerns about voter suppression, Block and his supporters see it as dismissing legitimate concerns about election integrity.

This clash highlights a broader debate on voter security in New Mexico. For Block, questioning election policies and advocating for voter ID is about protecting democracy.

For Toulouse Oliver, such benign questions represent a dangerous incitement that threatens election officials, and it appears she is not open to the will of the people of New Mexico.

  1. As long as illegals can obtain NM Driver’s licenses and be asked if they want to register to vote….as long as dead people, non-residents, vacant lot dwellers and non-citizens can fill out mailed ballots…We will assume many illegitimate votes have been counted in our State. When will she/they purge the voting roles? Denying Voter ID only increases our distrust in the System.

      1. Birth certificates issued by one of our states and confirmed as authentic should be the only way to get a driver’s license and a VOTER ID CARD..

    1. You pegged it absolutely right. Will our state’s Democrats ever demand better candidates from their party who support legal residents’ right to voting integrity? Sadly, I doubt it.

    2. NM is red State with voter ID. Shame on these self righteous freaks that claim to have the people’s interest at heart… Tyrants.

  2. In my opinion it has got to be up to us the people to get these changes made. until we all grow a real pair nothing will happen. I can’t imagine that purest democrats don’t want the same thing,

  3. Maggie,
I get that you do not like that New Mexicans are pushing back against your efforts to destroy our fine state. I also witnessed long lines of “first time voters” at my precinct who spoke little to no English. I am sure they were not there to get their green card and their voter registrations in one place.
New Mexico has cheated the vote for as long as I have been alive. I know this first hand. We are over it and not going to stand for the lies any longer Maggie. Pass the word on to MLG.

    Rev. Rico

    1. My dead father voted in the last four elections at NM (according to didmyfriendsvote.org when it was still up a week and a half ago), and someone changed his address from where he lived previously to Albuquerque.
Reported it to GOP lawyers. Hope they can get it stopped.

  4. This last election I worked as a challenger in probably one of the poorest communities in NM. The majority of a 90% hispanic community walked in with license in hand to give to the clerks. I would guess at least 80% of them. There is no reason to not have voter ID. If non citizens need a license the state could make the non citizen lic look different and stop the automatic signing up to vote. Many folks had to reregister as that program does not work well anyway.
The cheating is so bad a friend of mine quit visiting his parents because they voted for the dems the last 15 years, it is sad he no longer visits them at the graveyard where they have been for the last 13 years. John keep up the fight!

    1. MVD should have NOTHING TO DO with registering voters. Each county has a clerk that gets paid to do that kind of work.

  5. Where do we go to let our voices be heard? Telling the Democrats who are enabling the steal doesn’t seem to help. Our message just falls on deaf ears. Is there a forum where we will be heard by the masses?

    1. You call your state Rep and Senator. You also call the Secretary of state and the Governor’s office. Leave messages if necessary. Write letters as well. Copy the press and news stations.
Basically be a squeaky wheel. Doing so will do two things. You will learn just how much they do not care and also you will acquire the motivation to speak out even more.
X and Truth Social are fair places to have your voice heard outside of NM.

  6. Perhaps “we” should start a calling in campaign to SOS & leave a message: CLEAN UP THE VOTER ROLL & VOTER ID required. THAN call MLG with the same msg.?

  7. Thank you Mr Block for shining a light in the darkness of NM issues. The party 🎉 is over for corrupt Democrats and praying for the sake of this state and its children that many wake up. 🙏

    1. Audits don’t really prove anything because they only count the fraudulent ballots they don’t look at the validity of a ballot that’s the problem

  8. I don’t understand the claim of “voter suppression” if you have to have an ID. You need an ID for just about everything. People figure out how to drive, write checks, buy alcohol & cigarettes, with an ID and don’t seem to feel too suppressed. The only voter that gets suppressed if ID is required is the fraudulent ones who don’t have valid ID.

    1. To oppose and irritate Too Loose and her colleagues proves you are doing your job for NM and the U.S. Too Loose make me think anyone could practice medicine in NM without the proper license. Anyone for an appendectomy?

  9. Since MLG is also shown exhibiting her smiling approval of Too Loose, a thought occurs about MLG’s future plans not currently including a post in the Federal Government.

  10. I’m not a NM resident, but isn’t there a petition process to put certain issues on the ballot, i.e., voter photo ID, or recall a politician ? How is it possible SOSs wield so much power not be held accountable? Seems hostile to that “democracy” that liberals whine so much about.

  11. Without election integrity everything else is BS. As , I believe it was Lenin who said “ voters mean nothing, it’s who counts the votes that matters”. The marxists who run NM politics have certainly taken this philosophy to heart. Election integrity also means using paper ballots and dual party participation in the counting process. It should also require stiff penalties for voter fraud or tampering with an election. While we’re at it why not push for term limits on elected officials? A subject that makes both rinos and democommies incontinent. Career politicians are why we’re in this quagmire to begin with!

  12. We got to get women out of politics we got to get the power out of these crazy women’s hands …they’re simply not up to the task.
Feminism has been a huge massive mistake and the 19th amendment has literally doomed us

  13. Another thing it’s always in the eyes you always can tell by looking at the eyes look at that Moonbats eyes…wow.
    Loony bird crazy

  14. The only votes that are suppressed with voter ID laws are the illegal ones she is allowing to be cast in favor of their communofascist party members and agendas!
So… now if you ask questions you are harassing, and if you outright disagree with their policy, you are racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, etc ?
This reminds me of how the DA wants to turn verbal threats of shooting into a FELONY. A simple accusation will turn your life upside down. The reality is, this is just sneaky way to steal firearms from law abiding citizens.
These people know they are losing power, this makes them very, very dangerous.

  15. In my opinion, the only reason she would feel threatened is because she knows she is doing something illegal. The questions are threatening because they hit close to home.
Ask a police detective how guilty suspects act when certain questions are posed, I’d wager that for the most part they’d agree with the above.
