Gregg Hull, currently serving his third term as mayor of Rio Rancho, is reportedly weighing the possibility of entering the race for the Republican nomination for governor of New Mexico.
While Hull has not confirmed whether he plans to seek reelection as mayor in 2026, speculation is growing about his potential gubernatorial ambitions.
In an interview with the Sandoval Signpost, Hull acknowledged being approached about a run for the governor’s office.
“I’ve been approached by a lot of individuals to look at the possibility, and I’m currently weighing all of my options,” he shared.
Hull first entered the political arena in 2014 when he was elected mayor of Rio Rancho, the state’s second-largest city, after a long career in the private sector.
Sources within the Republican Party, speaking anonymously to the outlet, indicated that Hull is actively gauging support among party members for a campaign to succeed Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is term-limited and cannot seek reelection in 2026.
New Mexico Republicans face an uphill battle in statewide elections, having last won a statewide race in 2016 when Judith Nakamura secured reelection to the state Supreme Court.
However, the GOP has previously seen success at the governor’s mansion, with Susana Martinez winning two terms before Lujan Grisham’s tenure.
On the Democrat side, Joe Biden’s lame-duck Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich are rumored to be considering campaigns for the governorship, with Haaland’s campaign set to start shortly following her ouster from the Interior Department.
Mayor Hull has done a great job in Rio Rancho. I’d encourage him to run for Governor.

Interesting comment as Rio Rancho seemingly has positioned itself as a favorite among smaller business just looking for a chance and a fair shake.
Rio Rancho city council is whom made the deals (dirty at that) and Hull is the figure head looking the other way. He has to much sand, pun intended.
I’ve heard the same. Though we need to expose it early to stop infighting in primary. NM Republicans must show a united front in 2 yrs.
The mayor in Rio has done nothing to help it’s citizens, more taxes nothing for lower income people, not a good choice

The DNC learned this decades ago in NM… the GOP is still: “Stuck on political party undermining candidates showing stupidity right out of the gate”.
Being a lifelong GOP voter and member an a former candidate for political office in NM… I can attest to my previous wording…
If the GOP wants to win, it’ll start with voters like you who turn it around…and it’ll start with a well thought out post staying positive and stop undermining our political party… right from the start of the gate.

Please, for those on the fence, don’t count Mayor Hull out! I’m a long time resident of Rio Rancho and Hull has been fiscally responsible and an outstanding leader! He is a great choice to lead our state!! People are flocking to RR in droves for a reason and Hull is a huge part of that reason!

Good post, but you could go into just what areas of incompetence the DNC and current elected continue to do proving stupidity is bone marrow deep in the DNC. Like:
Failing to secure the border, Failure to vote to uphold deporting convicted illicit immigrants, failing to achieve any meaningful progress on children in the state… yada yada yada… I know the list is far to expansive but…picking one subject and slamming the DNC on it would suffice…
I am certainly interested in learning about Mr. Hull. We need a strong and honest governor to lead our state.

The high density low income diversity housing crap started under Obumer. With a reprieve under Trump. The brain dead Biden started it again. All cities are forced into the pack and stack housing by HUD , if they want the block grants and other housing incentives. It’s all about the money. So, one cannot blame a mayor for having to play the game to get the money. Sad, but that’s the truth of it. Hopefully, Trump will kill it again!

Myron Lizer is former Navjo Nation VP 2019 to 2023. Was at rally too.. Hated how Steve Pearce snubbed Susanna Martize. Trump wanted her to speak and called for her but she was excluded, was even shunned to the far North side of the rally while leadership was south center crowd. NM GOP needs to unite.
