On Tuesday, Democrats in the New Mexico House of Representatives voted 43-24 for H.B. 31 to allow children under 14 to change their legal name without parental consent or public notice.
“If the court finds that notice to one or more legal parents or legal guardians of a child who is under fourteen years of age will jeopardize the child’s or the applicant’s personal safety, the court shall not require notice,” the bill reads.
The bill, however, does not say what would constitute “jeopardizing” the child’s safety. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Christine Chandler (D-Los Alamos), said during the debate that the entire matter would fall under a judge’s discretion.
Previously, in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee, Chandler’s expert witness repeatedly told the committee that children under 14 would need parental consent. That turned out to be a lie.
On the House floor, Reps. Stefani Lord (R-Sandia Park), Greg Nibert (R-R0swell), and John Block (R-Alamogordo) made comments decrying the lack of parental consent.
Nibert talked about how he did not support sealing these records and depriving the parents of being able to make decisions for their children. He noted the “unintended consequences” of doing that.
Lord spoke about how this legislation could enable pedophiles and groomers to have easier access to harm children.
Block said, “It concerns me a 14-year-old could change their name without any parental involvement or consent. It’s a very slippery slope we’re going down. It’s bad policy.”
Supporters of the bill include the Transgender Resource Center for New Mexico, Planned Parenthood of Rocky Mountains, Equality New Mexico, and Bold Futures.
H.B. 31 now heads to the state Senate where it will be considered. If it passed the chamber, it will then head to Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk for a signature.
With children gaining rights OVER parents… I’d say the state needs to re-home these children to the politicians who voted away the parents rights. Sounds fair to me. Seriously…
You are quite right. Taxpayers already feed the kids, and big corporations support Feed America which in turn allows food companies to reap large write offs for food donations. That’s why you don’t see discounted items that seniors can afford. They already will do day care now and with the universal fund taxpayers recently passed the government might as well take over the responsibility of raising the kids too. Our America is coming closer to the soviet model-take over the future population by raising children in one mindset. We keep our population in a dumb-down mode. Now children will be able to change their name without parent’s permission-incredible.

Are our hispanic families ok with the state changing the sex of their children and then allowing them to change their name without the parents consent. I can just see a five year old taking the name of their favorite cartoon or make believe fantasy character . We will have names like Pokeman, G.I. Joe, Spongebob, Pretty Fairy Princess, and I’m a Big-Bad Motorcycle Man. Will the state pay for the name changes? For me to change my name involves a lot of paperwork and usually an attorney. It can be expensive. No oil, no industry, no money…. where will the funds come from? Maybe from the any term abortions and the Satanists practicing their sacrament?
This doesn’t stop a parent from calling his kid a nickname whether the child likes it or not. I think I would call my child something appropriate for doing this and never use their new name and just keep referring to them by their given name. I understand that the NM State Government has legal custody of children during the school hours. I’ve heard of young high school girls being escorted to Planned Parenthood by school nurses, WITHOUT, parental knowledge! This has been happening since 1989, I’m told. Need to check this out.

If you are doing your job as a parent this will not be an issue. It is an insane law but simply should not have any effect on effective parents.
I wish I could agree with you but children do have their own free will and they do make stupid decisions in spite of their “good” or Christian upbringing. I know Christian women who have gotten abortions and yes, they have deep, deep regrets. The law IS insane but then, these people are NOT in their right minds!!
